A week before Mothers Day, I stumbled out of the courtroom, barely able to see through my tears. A single sentence echoed in my mind: You are no longer husband and wife. Why had he done this to me? What great wrong had I committed to deserve such a punishment?
I married when I was just eighteen. It was a whirlwind romancesleepless nights, a sense of floating above the earth rather than simply existing. For five years, we lived happily, and I gave him all the love I had. I took care of everything: breakfast in bed, his favourite homemade meals, our house always spotless.
Unfortunately, his parents never warmed to me. Theyd whisper I wasnt good enough for their son, that he deserved someone better. I know their words got to him. I saw him change, gradually becoming cold and critical.
Our son was five at the time. At first, my husband doted on him, but he grew distant, almost indifferent. His parents filled his head with doubts, even suggesting our son might not be his, though the resemblance was unmistakable. My husband started spending more time at their house, almost as if hed moved in with them. When he returned, hed always be dissatisfied, shouting at me over the smallest things. I did my bestlooked after myself and kept our home welcomingbut it never seemed enough.
One day, his anger boiled over and he struck me. I couldnt believe it had come to this, but I clung to the hope that things would change. Shortly after, he told me he was leavinghed had enough. He walked out on me and our little boy. I begged him not to abandon us, pleading for our family, but he wouldnt listen.
Even after our divorce, I couldnt let go. My heart ached for him. He sends a small amount of child support and insists on a receipt for every pound spenteven breadcrumbs need proof. Im forced to ask for money from a man who shows little concern for his own child.
He rarely visits our boy, and the few times he does, its briefa day or two at most. Our son senses his coldness and wants nothing to do with him. My ex-husband blames me, accusing me of turning our son against him. In truth, I struggle daily to accept the end of our marriage and find myself in tears more often than not. Ive grown thin and weary since the separation, and sometimes I lash out at my son, aware that its wrong but not knowing how to stop.
How do I go on when my heart feels shattered? Every day, I scroll through my ex-husbands social media, watching his life unfold without us. Thats how I found out hes going to marry someone else, and my gloom deepened further. Now I understand why his visits have dwindled and why our child is growing indifferent. My mind knows its over, but my heart refuses to accept it. I wonderhow does one even cope?
In facing such pain, Ive learned that healing doesnt mean forgetting, but learning to value myself again. The love I showed my family must now be given to myself and my child. No matter how difficult the journey, life moves forward, and true strength comes from embracing hope and kindness even after heartbreak.
