**The Light in the Darkness**
**Chapter 1: The Break**
“Get out of here, you ungrateful girl!” her mother shouted at Emily, shoving her toward the door. Emily nearly stumbled, trying to keep her balance. Her mother glared at her with a hatred that hurt more than the words. “Dont come back! I never want to see you again!” she spat before slamming the door.
Emily stood frozen on the doorstep, her heart shattering. “Mum, please, I swear I didnthe” she tried to explain, but no one was listening.
Her stepfather, drunk and revolting, had tried to assault her. When Emily told her mother, the woman refused to believe her. To her mum, Emily was just trying to ruin her new relationship. So, without a second thought, she threw her out.
**Chapter 2: Wandering the Streets**
Alone, Emily wandered the cobbled lanes of the small mining town, begging for scraps. The cold wind bit her skin, and hunger gnawed at her. Men eyed her with looks that made her feel filthyespecially the ones who drank alone or in groups. She knew they were the worst.
Hours dragged by, hunger her only companion. She felt invisible, as if the world had forgotten her. As All Souls Day approached, she couldnt help thinking of her dad. She remembered how, when he was alive, their home would fill with marigolds and candles. This year, her mum wouldnt bothershe knew that much.
**Chapter 3: The Shrine**
With the little shed taken when thrown outincluding a photo of her dadshe decided to make her own shrine. She gathered wildflowers and what little food shed beggedstale bread and bruised fruitand arranged a small offering under an old tree. Kneeling before her fathers picture, her soul in tatters, she broke into sobs.
“Dad, if you love me, come for me take me with you,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I dont want to be here anymore.”
The wind ruffled her hair, soft as an unseen hand. Exhausted, she fell asleep beside the shrine.
**Chapter 4: The Revelation**
At dawn, she woke. Hunger hadnt vanished, so she ate the meager remains of the offering before wandering back into town.
Then she saw her mumrunning toward her, crying. Before Emily could react, the woman pulled her into a crushing hug. “Forgive me, love, please forgive me,” her mother wept. “I didnt believe you but last night, I saw.”
Emily stiffened, wary. Her mothers voice trembled. “I left him drinking, as usual then I heard screams. I ran downstairs and saw himfloating, slamming into the walls like a ragdoll! He screamed, Please, dont kill me! I confess, I wanted Emily! Then he dropped. Dead.” She sobbed. “And then I heard a voicenot of this world. It said, Leave this house and find your daughter, or I swear Ill drag you to hell next year.”
A chill ran through Emily, but her anger faded seeing her mother so broken. They clung to each other. In that moment, she chose forgiveness.
**Chapter 5: Coming Home**
Before stepping inside, Emily looked at the overcast sky, a tear rolling down her cheek. “Thank you, Dad,” she murmured. “I knew youd come.”
The house felt tense, the stepfathers shadow lingering. Emily shivered but pushed it aside. Her mother had promised hed never return.
“Ill deal with him,” her mother said firmly. “He wont hurt you again.”
Emily nodded, though fear prickled. Her mother had been weak beforebut now, she seemed resolute.
**Chapter 6: The Confrontation**
That night, her mother faced the stepfather. Emily watched, heart pounding. Though she couldnt hear everything, the anger in her mothers voice was clear.
“Youll never touch my girl again,” her mother shouted. “If you dont leave, Ill call the police.”
Relief and dread warred in Emily. Would it be enough?
Her mother returned, shaken but firm. “Hes gone, Emily. For good.”
**Chapter 7: Healing Together**
Days passed. The wound remained, but they began to mend. Together, they built the All Souls shrine, filling it with flowers and memories.
Emily realized love still existed between them. Her mother had failed herbut had also fought for her.
“Well do this together,” her mother said, arranging the flowers. “So your dads always with us.”
Emily smiled. For the first time in ages, there was hope.
**Chapter 8: New Traditions**
All Souls Day arrived, and the town came alive. Emily and her mother joined the celebrations, sharing stories about her father. Laughter and tears mingled, and Emily felt stronger. She knew her dad would always be with them.

Time passed. Emily returned to school, determined to finish her education. Her mother, though still wrestling with her demons, became her greatest support.
They learned to trust each other again. Slowly, the house filled with warmth.

A year later, Emily stood before their shrine, marigolds glowing in the sun. Peace settled over her.
“Thank you, Dad,” she whispered. “For watching over us.”
Her mother hugged her. “Well always be together,” she said. “Always strong.”
Emily smiled. Though life had been cruel, shed learned to rise and fight. With a heart full of love, she faced the futureready for whatever came next.
