Light in the Darkness
Chapter 1: The Break
“Get out, you ungrateful girl!” her mother shouted at Emily, shoving her toward the door.
Emily stumbled, barely catching her balance. Her mother glared at her with a hatred that stung worse than the words.
“Dont come back! I never want to see you again! You lying little” The door slammed before she could finish.
Emily stood frozen on the doorstep, her heart shattered into pieces.
“Mum, please, I swear it wasnt me he” she tried to explain, but no one was left to listen.
Her stepfather, drunk and disgusting, had tried to assault her. When Emily told her mother, the woman refused to believe her. To her mum, Emily was just trying to ruin her new relationship. So, she threw her out without a second thought.
Chapter 2: Wandering the Streets
Alone, Emily wandered the cobbled lanes of the small mining town, begging for spare change. The cold air bit her skin, and hunger gnawed at her stomach. Men watched her with eyes that made her feel dirtyespecially the ones who walked alone or in groups of drunks. She knew they were the worst.
Hours dragged by, and hunger became unbearable. Emily felt invisible, as if the world had forgotten her. With Bonfire Night approaching, she couldnt help but think of her dad. She remembered how, when he was alive, their home would fill with marigolds and candles. This year, her mum wouldnt do a thing. She knew that much.
Chapter 3: The Memorial
With the few things shed grabbed when thrown outincluding a photo of her dadshe decided to make a memorial. Using flowers shed picked from the roadside and scraps of food shed beggedstale bread and overripe fruitshe set up a small tribute under an old oak tree. Kneeling before her fathers picture, she broke down in tears.
“Dad, if you ever loved me, come for me take me with you,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I dont want to be here anymore.”
The wind ruffled her hair, gentle, like an invisible hand soothing her. Exhausted, she fell asleep beside the memorial.
Chapter 4: The Revelation
At dawn, she woke. Hunger hadnt vanished, so she ate what little was left of the offering before trudging back into town, searching bins for scraps.
Then, she saw her mother running toward her, tears streaming. Before Emily could react, the woman pulled her into a crushing hug.
“Forgive me, love, please forgive me,” her mother sobbed. “I didnt believe you but last night, I saw it.”
Emily stiffened, wary. Her mothers voice trembled.
“I left him drinking, like always then I heard screams. I ran downstairs and saw himfloating in the air, slamming into the walls! Like a ragdoll! He screamed, Please, dont kill me! I admit it, I tried to hurt Emily! Then he dropped. Dead, love. Dead!” She clutched Emily tighter. “Then I heard a voice not of this world. It said, Leave this house and find your daughter, or I swear Ill drag you to hell next year.”
A chill ran down Emilys spine, but her anger faded at the sight of her mother, broken and desperate. They held each other. In that moment, Emily decided to forgive her. Theyd start again.
Chapter 5: Homecoming
Before stepping inside, Emily looked at the cloudy sky, a tear rolling down her cheek.
“Thank you, Dad,” she whispered. “I knew youd come for me.”
The house felt heavy, the ghost of her stepfather lingering in the shadows. Her mother squeezed her hand.
“Ill deal with him,” her mother said firmly. “Hell never touch you again.”
Chapter 6: The Confrontation
That night, her mother faced her stepfather. Emily listened from the stairs, her heart pounding. Though she couldnt hear everything, the shouting was clear.
“Youll never come near my daughter again!” her mother yelled. “If you do, Ill call the police!”
Relief and fear warred in Emilys chest. Would it be enough?
Her mother returned, shaken but resolute. “Hes gone, Emily. For good.”
Chapter 7: Healing Together
Days passed. Though the pain remained, they began rebuilding. They prepared a memorial for Bonfire Night, filling it with flowers and memories.
Emily realised love still existed between them. Her mother had failed her, but shed also fought for her.
“Well do this together,” her mother said, arranging the flowers. “So your dads always with us.”
Emily smiled. For the first time in so long, she felt hope.
Chapter 8: New Traditions
Bonfire Night arrived, and the town came alive. Emily and her mother joined the celebrations, sharing stories about her dad.
Laughter and tears mingled. Emily felt stronger. She knew her father was watching over them.
Chapter 9: A Brighter Future
In time, Emily returned to school, determined to finish her education. Her mother, though still battling her own demons, became her biggest supporter.
They learned to trust again. Slowly, their home filled with warmth.
Chapter 10: A Fresh Start
A year later, Emily stood before their memorial. Marigolds glowed in the sunlight.
“Thank you, Dad,” she murmured. “For watching over us.”
Her mother hugged her. “Well always be strong together.”
Emily smiled. Shed found her place at last. Life had been cruel, but shed learned to rise again.
With a heart full of love, she faced the futureready for whatever came next.
