Mark stepped through his front door, a shadow stretched across his brow. The silence of the house unsettled him immediately; his wife was nowhere to be seen. Even more alarminghis little son, just one year old, was also gone. An undercurrent of worry swept over him, pushing aside the hope that this was simply a trivial absence.
Determined to uncover the truth, Mark hurried across the street to the neighbouring house. He knocked, lips pressed together, heart thumping. To his surprise, his neighbour appeared in the doorway, cradling Marks son gently in his arms.
The story unfolded quickly. Marks wife had entrusted their infant to the neighbour’s care, saying she needed to deal with something urgent. The neighbour, used to managing children, did as asked, but Mark couldnt shake the gnawing question: what could have compelled her to leave in such haste? Despite his confusion, Mark was gratefulhe found a meal waiting for him in the microwave, thoughtfully prepared by his wife before her departure.
Minutes blurred into half an hour, an hour, two, five. Marks anxiety climbed, clinging to him like damp fog. He dialled his wife again and again, each unanswered call tightening the knot in his chest. Shadows outside stretched longer as the sky darkened. At last, his son drifted into sleep, leaving Mark pacing and checking his phone, desperately awaiting a response.
The call finally came, breaking the hush of the night. Mark answered at once, voice strained as he questioned her whereabouts and what had happened throughout the day. Her replies were evasive, slipping away from the truth. Then her words landed like a hammer blowshe had no intention of returning home. Shed decided to leave their son in Marks care, not just for tonight, but forever.
Mark stood frozen, the phone pressed to his ear, disbelief and grief battling in his eyes. He clung to the desperate hope this might be a cruel prank, but reality pressed in on him, heavy as stonehis wife was gone, and all that remained was the overwhelming responsibility of raising his child alone. Now, he must shoulder the mantle of both mother and father for his son, as the credits roll and the screen fades to black.
