Married for Four Years and Supporting My Husband the Whole Time

I’ve been married for four years, and all this time I’ve been supporting my husband.

I’m 32 years old, and for four years now, I’ve been married to a man who has become nothing but a burden. My name is Emily, and I live in Manchester, carrying the weight of our finances entirely on my shoulders. My husband, James, is eight years older than me, and I’m exhausted from silently enduring his irresponsibility. Today, I finally snapped and asked him for money for the first time—instead of support, all I got were hurtful words and threats to leave. My life’s turned into a soap opera, and I don’t know how much longer I can take it.

James and I have been married for four years, yet I’ve never once felt protected or truly loved. He was married before me and has a daughter from his previous marriage. When that family fell apart, he moved back in with his parents, and while we were dating, he made it seem like he was staying at a mate’s place. Later, I found out it was a lie, but I let it slide, thinking our love would fix everything. James works as a sales manager for a big firm, and his job is nothing but stress. He takes it out on me, snapping over nothing, shouting, dumping his frustrations on me. I’ve never felt cared for, and his temper has been unbearable.

Whenever life got tough and I needed him most, James would just pack a bag and disappear to his mum’s. Once, I couldn’t stand being apart and begged him to come back after just a week. We live in *my* flat—the one I bought before we married—and I’m the one paying all the bills and keeping food on the table. James has never shown me a penny. He claims he’s saving for our “shared dream”—a cottage in the Lake District where we’ll supposedly live happily ever after. But with each passing day, I doubt I’ll ever see it. His promises ring hollow, and I’m sick of fairy tales.

Last winter, the heating bill shot up, and I finally worked up the nerve to ask James to chip in. He promised he would—but a month passed, and nothing. I’ve had enough. I can’t keep supporting a grown man who lives off me. What happens if we have kids? Will they have to get jobs as teens just to feed their own father? It’s madness! At the end of the month, I confronted him outright: was he going to pay his share or not? Instead of a reasonable answer, he flew off the handle, accused me of being ungrateful, and started packing his bags again, threatening to walk out.

I don’t understand why he treats me this way. What did I do to deserve it? My heart’s breaking from the pain and confusion. I can’t keep swallowing this injustice, but every time he storms off and slinks back, it chips away at me more. Four years I’ve carried this weight alone—now I’m at my limit. How much longer can I hold on before everything collapses under his indifference?
