**Diary Entry – 18th October**
“Mum, let me know when Daniel and Emily are coming over. I’d rather stay home with Lily that day,” my daughter said. I frowned. “What’s wrong? Why don’t you like her?” I’d noticed before how she dodged spending time with her brother’s wife, but this time, it made me wonder—what was really going on in our family?
**Family Gatherings and Tension**
I’ve two grown children: Daniel and Sophie. Daniel’s been married to Emily for three years now, no kids yet. Sophie lives on her own with her daughter, Lily, who’s seven. She visits often—my little cottage in the countryside with its garden is Lily’s paradise. She runs about, plays, even helps me water the roses. Daniel and Emily visit too, though less often—they’re busy in London with work.
I’ve always tried to keep us close, especially for holidays. But these last few years, Sophie’s been avoiding visits if Emily’s around. At first, I thought it was coincidence, but then she said it outright: “Just tell me when they’re coming. I’d rather not be there.” I asked why, but she just brushed me off. “No reason, just prefer not to.” But a mother knows—something’s not right.
**What’s Wrong with Emily?**
Emily seems lovely—polite, helps in the kitchen, brings gifts, asks after my health. Daniel adores her, and they look happy. But I’ve started noticing how cold she is with Sophie. At our last dinner, Emily barely spoke to her, and when Lily chattered away, Emily just smiled quietly. Maybe it’s nothing, but Sophie takes it as indifference.
I’ve tried talking to Sophie, but she dodges or jokes it off. Once, she finally said, “Mum, she’s just so… superior. Acts like she’s above us, like Lily and I are beneath her.” I was surprised—Emily’s never struck me that way. But maybe I’m missing what Sophie sees. Sophie’s always been sensitive, even more so since the divorce.
**A Chat with Daniel**
I asked Daniel if there was some rift. He shrugged it off. “Emily’s fine with Sophie, they just don’t click. Sophie pushes people away—always in her own head.” I disagreed—Sophie’s warm, just maybe uneasy around Emily.
Daniel said he’d talk to Emily, but I doubt it’ll help. This tension… it’s growing. Lily adores Uncle Daniel but calls Emily “the aunt who never talks.” Kids sense things we don’t.
**Keeping the Family Together**
It hurts seeing my children at odds. I want us all together, like before—Lily growing up surrounded by love. But how, when Sophie won’t even share a room with Emily? Should I step in? Or leave them to sort it and risk things worsening?
