Mother-in-Law Evicted After Husband’s Betrayal

My marriage to Nigel lasted six years, and from the start, we lived in my flat. Years ago, I’d inherited a one-bedroom flat from my grandmother, for which I was endlessly grateful. Over time, Nigel and I moved to a more spacious home, and his parents, who lived in a rural village and couldn’t afford to relocate, asked if they could stay in my old flat. I took pity on them and agreed—they’d always treated me kindly.

Recently, I discovered Nigel had been unfaithful the entire time. He’d hidden his affairs well, and I’d had no idea. The biggest question weighing on me was: what should I do about his parents? They’d lived in my flat for years, paying only the utilities. I wanted passive income from renting it out, but his parents couldn’t afford London’s market rates. Their only options were returning to their village, where they still owned a home, or finding odd jobs to cover rent elsewhere.

Nigel’s parents knew about his betrayal but never stood by me. Of course, they weren’t responsible for their grown son’s actions—but if Nigel’s feelings for me had faded, why hadn’t he said so before stepping out? In the end, I decided to hurt him where it counted: by asking his parents to leave. I explained I could no longer let them live there rent-free. They were upset, but I had no choice.

I hoped evicting them would make Nigel realize the gravity of his actions. His parents were shocked and admitted they’d sold their village home to settle in the city, leaving them with nowhere to go. Still, I felt little sympathy—they could always turn to Nigel’s new girlfriend for help. Now, I’m searching for tenants to secure that extra income.

Friends were divided. Some called my decision justified; others thought I should’ve shown mercy and given the elderly couple time to find a place. But I refused to let anyone exploit my kindness again. His parents lived there four years, and I never charged them a penny beyond bills.

What stings most is how Nigel could betray me when our marriage seemed fine—no arguments, no strife. Perhaps he’d grown bored and sought excitement elsewhere. It hurts that he didn’t value my support, my care for our home, or the meals I cooked. I welcomed him and his parents into my life, and in return, got betrayal.

I told Nigel I wanted a divorce. He begged for forgiveness, but my mind was set: once a cheater, always a cheater. I demanded he move out immediately and gave his parents a deadline before the new tenants arrived. Let them blame their son for this.

Sometimes I wonder if I was too harsh, but I’ve learned not to let others take advantage. Those who wronged me earned their consequences. In the end, justice finds everyone.
