My Brother Driven His Wife to Despair – Then the Unthinkable Happened

My brother drove his wife to despairthen the unthinkable happened.

My brother was my role model. Since childhood, I always looked up to my older brother, James. To me, he was a mentor, a protector, and someone to emulate.

When I got married, he told me, “Listen, little brother. Never tell your wife how much money you have. Give her an inch, and shell take a mile. Keep her on a tight leashdont let her spend freely!” At the time, it seemed extreme. But James was five years older, already married, and I assumed he knew best.

Thankfully, my wife, Emily, wasnt like that. She didnt chase designer labels, demand expensive gifts, or dream of luxury. Over time, though, my brother and I drifted apartour wives didnt get along, and James was always buried in his business. I played in a band; he owned farms and land. Every time we met, I braced for a lecture. James always found a reason to scold me.

*”Money matters more than family.”*

Hed say, “Youre reckless! Why live paycheck to paycheck? Why let your wife waste money on nonsense?” I never argued, but his words stung. After these talks, Id try to save, then slip back into old habits.

James had a daughter, Sophie. He kept her under lock and keyno pocket money, no trendy clothes, no makeup. She grew up in strictness. Sometimes she visited us, and Emily and I slipped her a bit of cash on the sly. At sixteen, Sophie ran away just to escape his control. James even called it “serves her right”said it was her fault, that he hadnt been strict enough.

But the worst came later.

*”A holiday turned nightmare.”*

Two years ago, we planned a family trip to the seaside. Thats when I saw it firsthand. James hounded his wife over every penny.

“Another coffee? Cant you wait till were home?”
“A pizza? Are you mad? Its daylight robbery!”
“An ice cream for the kids? They can have water!”

He scrutinised every receipt, every pound spent. Strolling with him was impossible. My kids, like any others, wanted candyfloss, balloons, souvenirsbut James just scowled and muttered, “Youll bleed your parents dry, you know that?”

And yet, he had far more money than I did. He was just terrified to spend it.

Emily finally snapped. “Lets stay a few more days. Without them.” I agreed. James and his wife left that nighthe was rushing to a farm equipment auction. But by morning, I got the call

Theyd crashed.

*”After that, I changed forever.”*

They say he fell asleep at the wheel. I lost my brother that day. Now, Im a different man. I dont penny-pinch for “old age.” I dont think twice about buying a coffee. I spoil my kids, treat Emily, buy myself nice suits.

Yes, money mattersbut whats the point of hoarding it if you dont live? Clutching wealth like youll take it to the grave is madness. What truly matters is holding onto the people you love. Theyre irreplaceable.

Money never is.
