My brother rang to tell me our elderly parents were at loggerheads, but what really stunned me was the way he decided to solve it.

Susan is sixty years old. She has two children and shares a modest two-bedroom flat with her husband in Birmingham. Well, shares isnt quite the right word. For years, shes simply endured his company. Hes always been proud, self-absorbed, and rather hard-hearted. Everything at home must be just so, just the way he demands. Thats why Susan has tolerated him for so long.

They have a grown daughter, Emily, who has been married to Tom for twelve years. The two of them took out a mortgage on a small terraced house, and thankfully, theyve been diligent about paying it off. Every bonus and bit of extra income is tucked away to cover the next payment.

Both Emily and Tom work long hours, but they manage not only to make the mortgage payments but also to provide well for their two young children. Emilys brother, James, is more comfortably off. He owns a couple of flats in London and a cosy cottage in the Cotswolds.

One day, James phoned Emily with unexpected news: Mum and Dad are getting a divorce Mum decided. The flats already been sold, and theyve split the money. I told Dad Id look after him, and you said youd look after Mum, James announced.

What? Wheres she supposed to live? You know we only have a two-bedroom flat and two kids already. Where on earth would Mum sleep? Emily replied, flustered.

Is that my problem? Youre not going to leave Mum out in the cold, are you? asked James.

Toms not going to be thrilled with this, either, Emily said, worry clear in her voice.

Thats your business, James said curtly and hung up.

James had already set one of his one-bedroom flats aside for their father, so for him, the matter was settled. With no other option, Emily decided to take out another mortgage for her mothers sake. Against all odds, the bank approved it. Emily put the deposit down using the share of money her mother received from selling the flat. Now she works even harder to keep up with two mortgages.

Tom still hasnt come to terms with his wifes decision. Sometimes he looks weary and resentful, insisting that people their parents age ought not to divorcethat it lays too much strain on the shoulders of their children, that it simply isnt right.

In the end, Susan learned that sometimes, standing up for your own happinessno matter your agemay cause difficulties for those around you, but its never too late to seek a life of respect and peace. For the rest, its a reminder: supporting loved ones doesnt always come in ideal circumstances, but kindness and understanding can help families weather even the most unwelcome changes.
