My brother once confided in me that our mother had laid hands on his wife, and even then, I sensed that something was amiss.
I recall it distinctly it was during one of our holidays. Mother rang me in a state of utter distress, her voice trembling with sobs that would not subside. Anxiety gripped me as soon as I heard her. After hanging up, I reached out to my brother, hoping for an explanation, but he met me with cold indifference. He insisted I speak with Mother myself, claiming I knew full well why she was crying. He even remarked that she had finally received what she deserved. At a loss, my husband and I reluctantly cut our trip short. Despite the expense of the train tickets back to London, we hurried home.
When we arrived, Mother was still a picture of anguish, unable to calm herself. I brewed a cup of chamomile tea to settle her nerves, and finally she recounted the troubling events. Apparently, upon returning from work, she was startled to find my sister-in-law, Emily, covered in bruisesand knowing she was expecting a child, Mothers concern deepened immeasurably. Mother rushed to her, tried to embrace her, and gently asked what had happened. Just then, my brother, Charles, walked through the door. In that instant, Emily suddenly jumped up and began shouting, accusing Mother of hurting her.
Mother was dumbfounded, rooted to the spot, unable to grasp what was unfolding. Charles, entirely convinced by Emilys story, was horrified and ordered our mother out of the house on the spot. Later, he took Emily to the hospital, and tragically, she lost the baby. Charles steadfastly refused any explanations, shut us out, and bore a deep grudge against Mother. Yet my instincts told me something was awry, and I put my faith in Mothers words. Fortune, however, has a way of revealing the truth, and it came from the most unlikely of sources.
It transpired that one of Emilys close friends, a kind-hearted soul named Sarah, quietly let me in on the real story. She revealed that everything had been orchestrated by Emily herself, who wished to turn Charles against our mother and force her out of their home. The bruises and even the loss of the baby were not as they seemedEmily had taken drastic measures herself. When Charles finally discovered the truth, he was overcome with rage, sending Emily away at once, and then sought Mother out, earnestly apologising for all he had put her through.
A mothers heart, as the saying goes, is always forgiving. Despite her ordeal, Mother welcomed Charles back with open arms, her love undiminished by all that had passed. How swiftly the storms of family strife can pass, yet how deeply they are remembered in the quiet years that follow.
