I never imagined that my own kin would be the reason I left home. They seemed convinced that supporting every family member in need was my duty alone. From a young age, I was determined to become a software developer, as Id always been passionate about it. Steadily, I finished school and then moved to another city for university, working diligently towards my ambitions. In time, my efforts bore fruitI found myself with a comfortable, well-paid position in programming.
I was content and had no desire to marry; I treasured my independence and enjoyed living on my own terms. Despite my work commitments, I always helped my mother financially and took her on a holiday each year. I felt grateful for everything shed done for me.
However, everything changed the moment my younger brother started badgering me for money, claiming he simply couldnt find employment. At first, I didnt mind giving him a hand, but soon I saw he was taking advantage of our bond. This troubled me greatly, so I decided to speak frankly with him. I told him it was high time he faced reality, found a job, and began earning his own keep, instead of leaning on others.
My refusal wasnt out of greedI only wished for my brother to take responsibility for his own life and future. To my surprise, after turning him down, our mother rang and promptly picked a quarrel with me, accusing me of being selfish and forgetting my family. As if that wasnt enough, some of my relatives turned their backs on me over the whole affair. The mounting shame forced me into a hard decision: I resolved to move abroad.
While I don’t regret my choicethese days I live well, earning a respectable salaryI did grow distant from my family. Nevertheless, I still try to ring my mother regularly and offer help when she needs it.
