My Daughter Chose to Start Her Adult Life and Moved In with Her Boyfriend—But Just Two Weeks Later, I Found Alice at Our Doorstep with Her Bags Packed

Late one evening, I returned home only to be greeted by an unexpected sight. My daughter was bustling around, hurriedly stuffing her belongingsclothes, toiletries, gadgetsinto bags. I stood there, confused, and finally managed, Where on earth are you heading?
It turned out that my eighteen-year-old Emily had suddenly decided she was an adult. The surprise must have shown on my face, as I let out an incredulous gasp. Emily glanced at me calmly and announced,
Mum, Im moving out to live with Oliver.
What do you mean, moving out? Who is this boy? Arent you going to introduce us? I demanded. And by the way, how will you cover your expenses? Does he have a proper family? Dont you think youre rushing this a bit?
She rolled her eyes and snapped back, Mum, pleasedont be so ancient. Its the twenty-first century. Im an adult, I have my own life now!
I bit my tongue, suddenly painfully aware of how little power I had. I watched helplessly as Emily gathered up her things, silently saying goodbye to the blender Id never used. She hoisted her bags and left the flat. Out of the window, I caught sight of a young manpresumably Oliverwaiting to ferry her belongings to his car. If this was the road she chose to adulthood, then so be it. Time would reveal what it had in store for her. The very next day, I had the locks changed on the front door; you can never know what surprises await when your daughter had a new boyfriend in tow.
Days passed in silence. Emily didnt ring, not even a text. I hadnt anticipated that shed leap so hastily into her grown-up life. Then, the phone finally rang. It was Emily, sounding matter-of-fact:
Mum, will you pay my tuition fees?
It hurt, knowing my daughter only rang because she wanted my help with money. She didnt even ask how I was faring.
No, Emily, I answered quietly. Youre an independent woman now. Im not going to interfere in your business.
Brilliant. Thanks, Mum. she retorted sharply and hung up.
It was exactly as shed wished. Now she could see what it really meant to be an adult.
I decided to turn Emilys old room into a study. After all, she wasnt living with me anymore. I even browsed for a lovely desk and some chairs, although I left the bed, just in case. Perhaps shed come to her senses and return.
Two weeks ticked by. One evening, weary from work, I reached my flat only to find Emily at the doorstep, bags piled by her side, looking utterly exhausted.
Darling, why didnt you tell me you were coming? I asked softly.
She fidgeted, her cheeks flushing. I was embarrassed, Mum. Arent you even happy to see me? she sniffled, wiping her eyes.
Of course Im happy, love. Dont be daft. Lets get you inside.
We entered the flat and Emily began unpacking, returning her things to their old placesexcept for the coffee machine. Apparently, it had been left at Olivers mothers house, where shed been staying; his mum considered it fair payment for room and board. As it turns out, Oliver is thirty. When Emily realised I wouldnt foot her university bill, shed turned to Oliver. But he had no intention of taking on financial responsibility for her needs.
What baffles me most is what must have been going through Olivers mind, bringing my unemployed daughter home to his parents.
