My Daughter-in-Law Was Furious When I Told Her Our Family Tradition is to Name a Child After Their Grandfather.

Dear Diary,

Today I found myself in a rather prickly spot with my daughterinlaw, Emily Clarke, after I reminded her that, in our family, its customary to name a boy after his paternal grandfather.

Emily and I have generally gotten along without any big rows. We may spar now and then, but we always patch things up quickly and hold no grudges. When I learned she was expecting, I was over the moon. It wont be long before I have a grandchild wandering around the house.

The prospect of a grandson made my son, Michael Whitaker, nearly burst with joy; hed always dreamed of having a boy. As soon as the babys gender was confirmed, he declared he would name the child after his own father, Arthur. Thats the family tradition here in Manchesterboys carry the name of their grandfather. When Emily heard that the babys name was already decided, she threw a fit, insisting she would pick a name herself and would not bend to our wishes.

I tried to sit down with her calmly to discuss the matter, but she flatout said the decision was settled. Michael tried to back me up, yet Emily wouldnt listen, announcing that her parents would take her into the delivery suite and that the baby would stay with them.

Michael treats Emily well, always showing her love and care, yet she seems deaf to his efforts. She can be rather selfish, never keeping quiet even for the sake of her husband. When I attempted to explain our family customs, she cut me off straightaway.

To my astonishment, I later discovered that Emily and Michael had already settled on a name for the child without consulting anyone else, insisting that any matter concerning their family was theirs alone and that my opinion meant nothing. I see it differently; after all, this child will be my grandchild and will continue our line.

When the naming issue resurfaced, Emily brusquely told me it was none of my business. I was left speechless. Id poured my heart and energy into Michael, and now I felt like an unwelcome guest in his life. I cant help wondering how Im supposed to move forward, how Im to communicate with my own son and his wife.

The lesson Im taking from all this is that traditions are only as strong as the respect they command. Without mutual regard, even the most cherished customs can crumble, leaving everyone feeling adrift.
