My relationship with my former partner concluded in a courtroom. I wont point fingers; in a relationship, blame is never one-sided.
The truth of the matter is, my second wife ended up finding herself a lover. He was a well-to-do businessman who settled in our city years ago and later opened a small tea shop down the street. At first, she did her best to hide their affair, but in the end, they didnt bother keeping it secret.
Then one day, she showed up and told me straight out she was filing for divorce and intended to claim half of our house. She was expecting Id lose my temper or get anxious, but the house had been purchased solely with my hard-earned pounds. She had no real claim to it other than the fact shed lived there for two years. Now, she had the nerve to demand her share.
I kept calm throughout. I didnt try to convince her otherwise or stop her from going to court. I simply waited until she lost her case and had to pay the court fees. My first marriage had already taught me a hard lesson. That court battle lasted over three years, simply because we couldnt see eye to eye. Every hearing ended in shouting matches.
Eventually, my first wife got what she wantedshe took me to court for half my assets. She secured herself a clever solicitor. I lost the flat Id inherited from my father.
With my second wife, though, I acted much wiser. Before we married, I already had a flat, which Id renovated myself. But the deeds were in my brothers namea man I trust completely. When the divorce came, there was nothing for her to claim. After the fiasco of my first marriage, I made sure no one could take advantage of me again.
If theres a lesson in all this, its that experience is the best teacher. Sometimes, its the scars of the past that make us cautious, and learning from our mistakes is what helps us protect whats truly ours.
