My wife grew up surrounded by warmth and affection in her parents home. Sadly, when my father-in-law was 57, his beloved wife passed away. It was a crushing blow for him, and understandably, he struggled to carry on. So, we decided to sell his flat, split the proceeds between our family and my brother-in-laws, and welcome him into our home until he managed to find his feet again. Thats what we did.
I imagined hed stay for about six months, then get back on his feet, buy his own place, and move out. But that wasnt the case. He settled in quite nicely here. He never offers to pay for utilities or groceries. I do the cooking, the laundry, and keep his room tidy. His only commitment is his job. Its as if hes found himself a permanent holiday cottage.
He ended up living with us for eleven years. Eventually, he started to tell us how we should run our lives, offering unsolicited advice on everything. After some time, we decided to buy him a house just outside the city, so he could have his own space. Hes a tall, robust man, perfectly capable of living on his own.
We purchased the house and made sure it was ready for him to move in. But then he began pretending to have heart problems and feigning various ailmentsanything to avoid leaving us and stay in our household. Frankly, I was worn out with it all.
Looking back, Ive learned that kindness can sometimes be taken for granted, and its important to set boundaries to protect your own peace.
