My Father-in-Law Was Left Speechless When He Saw How We Were Living

My father-in-law was left speechless when he saw how we were living.

James and I first met at a wedding for mutual friends. I had just moved to London and landed myself a job. Honestly? I was over the moon to have finally escaped the countryside and started a new life in the city. Our relationship blossomed almost overnightbarely a year later, our daughter was born.

But then everything changed.

Why does our daughter have blonde hair and blue eyes when you and I are both brunettes? James asked me one evening.

Love, I think she takes after your father. Look how alike they are, I replied, trying to reassure him.

Dont be ridiculous. A child should look like her parents, not distant relatives. And my mother is convinced she isnt mine.

I should say, Margaretmy mother-in-lawhas never been fond of me. She always assumed I didnt truly love her son and that I only married him to escape my old rural life. However, my father-in-law, William, is a remarkably kind man. Hes divorced from Margaret and has since remarried, but he has never stopped looking out for James.

One day, James brought another woman into our home. He told me to pack my things and leave, without giving it a second thought.

I had nowhere to go. My parents didnt want me backespecially not with a child in tow. I rang up a friend who graciously took us in for a few days. After that, I managed to find a small room in a shared flat, and my daughter and I moved in together. Unfortunately, I was down to my last pounds.

One afternoon, while popping into Tesco, I heard someone call my name.

Girls, where have you gone? I even went to the countryside looking for you, William said as he rushed over to us.

Hello. Im glad to see you, I whispered, relief flooding through me.

I know what James did, and theres no excusing it. He and his mother are as stubborn as each other. Where are you living now?

Were renting a room.

I see. Im in a bit of a hurry, but when Im back, well sort something out for you. Here, this should keep you going for the next couple of weeks, he said, handing me an envelope.

I nearly cried with gratitude, knowing I could now buy food and milk for my daughter.

William turned up earlier than expected to visit us, and he was utterly shocked by the state we were in. His new wife didnt want anything to do with us, so having us live with them wasnt possible. Still, he came up with another solutionhe used his life savings to buy a flat, placing it in our daughters name. I tried to refuse such a generous gift, but he wouldnt hear of it. It wasnt really for me, he said; it was for his granddaughter.

A month later, my little one and I were settling into our new home. William even brought furniture and all the essentials.

Dont rush about putting her in nurseryshe needs her mum right now. Ill help you out, dont worry. And even my wife has calmed downshe wants to meet her granddaughter, he told me warmly.

Thank you so much! I managed, tears pricking at my eyes.

Dont cry, dear. Come to me if you ever need anythingIll never turn you away. Things will get better with time, youll see.

Im so grateful that my daughter has such a wonderful grandfather in her life, even if she hasnt been as lucky with her father. William gave everything he had just to help us through.

Years have now passed. Ive remarried, but I have never forgotten my father-in-law. He is always welcome under our roof, and we visit him often.
