I still cant wrap my head around the fact that my husband actually made me choose between my poorly mum and our marriage. Honestly, those words came out of his mouth and I just froze it didnt even feel real. Wed been married eight years when Mum fell ill. It wasnt just a little cold or anything like that. Im her only daughter, no siblings, no one else to help.
Those first few months, I tried to do it all. Id get up at the crack of dawn for work, swing by Mums to drop off shopping or her prescriptions, then rush home to cook dinner and look after the kids and my husband. Four hours sleep a night, if that. I was shattered, dark rings under my eyes, my body felt heavy, but I never complained. I told myself it was just a rough patch and hed understand.
But slowly, something changed in him. If I was late home because Mum needed me, hed get in a mood. If I was on the phone to her too long, hed make faces or sigh loudly. One day, he just told me: Youre not the same anymore. Youre always over there. Its like you dont even live here. I told him Mum needed me; there was no one else. He just said, Then hire someone.
I tried to explain we cant afford a carer, and besides Mum will only trust me. But he kept saying the house felt like a hotel, that I just popped in and out, that he didnt feel like a priority. I felt torn in two.
The worst row we had was on a Sunday. Id just come home from A&E with Mum, still in my hospital clothes, absolutely drained. As soon as I walked in, he just said, cold as anything: This cant go on. You have to pick keep playing nurse for your mum or stay with me and fix our marriage. I asked if he was being serious. He just looked at me and said, Yeah. Im not living the rest of my life in second place.
That night, I couldnt sleep at all. I thought about poor Mum, lying there on her own, clinging to me as her last bit of family. I thought about my kids, our home, all those years together but it felt like no one saw how exhausted I was, how hard I was trying, how much I hurt.
Next day, I went to see Mum. She looked so frail in bed, but when she saw me, she just smiled. Held my hand and quietly said, Thank you for not leaving me. And in that moment, I knew I couldnt abandon her. So I went home and told my husband, I wont choose, but if you force me, then my choice is clear.
That afternoon, he packed up two suitcases. Told me Id wrecked our marriage, that Id always put Mum first. I just stood there shaking, not sure if Id just lost my husband or finally stood up for myself.
Now, my lifes a bit of a juggle between hospital visits and home. I am tired absolutely. Im sad too. But at least I sleep with a clear conscience. Im trying to talk Mum into moving in with us it would make life so much easier.
Would you have done the same as me?
