My husband had a grandmother he was especially close to. Every summer, without fail, hed stay at her house in the countryside. She always welcomed him and never seemed to mind; even though, back then, she ran her own business. She managed everything herself, selling herbal remedies to local chemists all over the county. My husband never really knew exactly how she kept it all ticking along, but he remembers clearly that, for those days, she earned rather a lotcertainly more than most.
She was quite a character, his gran. She adored my husband, never skimping when it came to feeding him well, but she was carefulshe wouldnt spare even a few pounds for what she saw as silly amusements. Everyone in the family suspected she was quietly putting something aside. The house had these enormous wardrobes with endless compartments, all locked securely.
As a boy, my husband was forever curious about what was kept inside, but his gran always brushed him off, saying it was all work-related. Then times changed. The business world shifted, and competition overtook her little company. She retrained as a healer of sortsnot asking for payment, though her clients were clearly well-to-do. Wed often visit when she was still with us, but her life was nothing like it had been. She wore tatty old clothes, her meals were plain, and for all the food we would bring along, shed just refuse, insisting we shouldnt spoil hershe was used to her own ways.
When she finally passed away, she left her house to my husband. During the sorting out, we found her pantry packed with food, all of it long out of date. Grateful clients kept delivering gifts, but she never touched any of it. And then, the real surprise: we unlocked those mysterious cupboards. Inside we found a treasure trove of luxury goods from the ninetieslike walking into a museum of curiosities, all in astonishing quantity.
It left me truly baffled. Why did she keep her money tied up in things destined to lose their worth? I cant pretend to understand her, not really.
