My Mother Forced Me to Give Up My Child, and Now I Know I’ll Never Have Children Again

I was sixteen when I discovered I was pregnant by the boy I loved. I had been dating Harry for a year before the news hit us, and the thought of telling anyone terrified us, so we kept it secret from our families. When my parents finally learned the truth they were furious.

The Thompsons were regarded as a model family in our quiet markettown in Kent. As an only child I had always done well at school, and Harry, who was in my class, was equally bright. Because we were both under eighteen, the final decision fell to our parents.

Both of us had been aiming for good Alevels and hoping to win places at reputable universities, so our parents dreamed of us securing solid careers. A baby would have thrown those plans into disarray.

My mother, determined to preserve our future, insisted I terminate the pregnancy. It was still legal and the procedure went smoothly. Afterward Harry and I returned to our routine, finishing school, enrolling at university, and a year later we married with our parents’ blessing.

A few months into our marriage, I became pregnant again and we were overjoyed. In the sixth month, however, I began to bleed heavily. My son was born tiny, weighing just a pound and a half, and three hours after his first breath he died.

Complications arose; the doctors could not stop the bleeding and were forced to remove my womb. I will never be able to bear children again. My mother visited me in the hospital, apologising for having forced the earlier abortion, though her words could not heal the wound.

The past cannot be undone, and past mistakes cannot be repaired. I now know I will never be a mother, and I fear whether Harry and I can sustain a happy marriage without children, which many see as the cornerstone of a family.

Through this painful journey I have learned that no one can control every twist of fate, but we can choose how we carry the weight of our choices and find strength in the love that remains.
