My husband and I lived together for a decade, sharing an enviable life that many would have admired. Our family was close-knit, though things began to change when children entered the picture and we had to adjust to a new way of living.
I remember one peculiar afternoon when I noticed the childrens toys were missing, and not just any trinkets but costly playthings. I questioned the little ones, scoured every corner of our flat, but the missing items were nowhere to be found. It had us baffled almost as if the toys had vanished into thin air. Even my husband joined in the search, but his efforts were fruitless.
My mother-in-law was a frequent visitor to our home, always eager to spend time with her grandchildren. She and I would typically share a cup of tea, after which she’d play in the nursery. This time, however, she stopped by the childrens room for only a moment before heading off home.
Shortly after, another toy went missing. I confronted everyone in the house, yet they all insisted they had played with different toys. Then my son piped up, recalling that his grandmother had been holding the missing item, placing it in her bag before leaving. My husband decided it was time to speak to his mother.
A few days later, during a gathering with friends, the issue slipped our minds until my mother-in-law departed early. Sure enough, another prized toy was peeking out of her bag.
I demanded a reason. “I only wanted to wash them,” she claimed.
I knew the truth was not so simple. Eventually, she confessed. She had been taking the toys as gifts for her sister-in-laws little boy, explaining that the woman had no means to buy such things, and wanted to bring joy to the child.
After a difficult conversation, she promised to stop. Yet, the toys continued to go missing. My husband found himself embroiled in arguments with his mother over the matter he accused her of stealing and giving away the childrens belongings.
The situation grew so serious that even our children began to notice. They asked their grandmother not to visit, fearing she would take their toys. These days, whenever my mother-in-law expresses a wish to come round, we make up countless reasons to decline.
Looking back, it really was her own doing.
