Before I married my wife, Emily, I spent three years working abroad. During that time, I managed to save enough pounds for a flat. So, shortly after our wedding, we started hunting for a place of our own. We searched for ages, hoping to find the right home, and finally found a three-bedroom flat in the heart of Manchesterclose to a Tesco and just down the road from a school. The only downside was that it needed quite a bit of work, and the price was steep. We had enough money to buy the flat, but not for renovations. Still, that didnt stop us. We decided it was the best choice for us.
The rooms were bright and spacious, bathed in sunshine most days. Once all the paperwork was sorted, we moved in straight away. Renovation promised to drag on, so I considered asking my mother-in-law for a loan. I would keep working abroad and pay her back in no time. But she refused, saying she needed her money for her younger daughter, who was still at university.
Four years passed. With our own hands, we turned that flat into a cosy home. We bought furniture, fixed things up, and worked continuously. Then we realised we needed a car, so we continued saving and managed to buy one. A few months later, Emily told me she was pregnant, and we were over the moon.
Lately, Emilys mum started visiting every day. Each time, she would whisper something to Emily, but I couldnt catch what. Eventually, the truth came outher other daughter had kicked her out of the house. Shed brought her boyfriend home, the one she planned to marry, and he didnt get along with her mother. He gave her an ultimatum: him or her mum. Naturally, the girl chose her boyfriend.
Now, my mother-in-law has nowhere to go. Shes given all her money to her youngest daughter. The daughter wont move out unless her mum buys her a flat, because neither she nor her boyfriend want to live with Emilys mum. So, my mother-in-law decided to move in with us. After all, we have a roomy flatplenty of space for everyone.
When I found out, I told Emily that I would never agree to it. When we needed help, her mum said no. Now she expects us to take her in. I wont have it. Not ever. Im at a loss as to how to convince Emily to refuse. Her mum has her own flatshe should stand her ground. Let her daughter and her boyfriend figure out their own living arrangements.
