My mother is seriously ill, and I feel nothing about it. She earned it.
In our block of flats lives an elderly woman named Margaret. She’s always been the kind of neighbor who’d lend a hand or a listening ear. When my mother fell ill, Margaret would often pop round to look after her while I was at work or tending to the kids. She helped with the chores, kept Mum company, and thanks to her care, my mother started to recover.
Then, out of the blue, Margaret herself fell terribly ill. Her condition was far worse, and she had to be hospitalised. Until then, I’d assumed she was alone—no children, no family. But it turned out she had a whole clan: a son with some fancy job in the City, a daughter running her own boutique, and a handful of grandkids. All comfortable, all well-off, yet in all the years we’d been neighbors, I’d never once seen any of them visit.
When Margaret was admitted to hospital, her daughter finally showed up—to pack a bag of essentials, mind you, nothing more. I ran into her in the hallway and offered to help, sharing what I’d learned from caring for my own mum. Her reply left me gobsmacked:
“This isn’t my problem. I brought what the doctor said to bring. That’s it. She should be grateful I came at all.”
I was stunned. How could anyone talk about their own mother like that? Drop off a checklist of items and vanish without a shred of warmth.
Every evening after work, I’d stop by the hospital to sit with Margaret, chat about nonsense, try to lift her spirits. Then I’d go home and stew over that daughter of hers, that spectacular lack# Changelog
