So, you wont believe whats been going on with my brother lately. When he turned 18 last month, he dropped this huge surprise on ushe announced he wanted to marry his girlfriend, Chloe. Now, our parents were absolutely not on board with this development. Theyve never really liked Chloe, mostly because they say shes a bit rough around the edges and doesnt seem that bothered about her studies. She goes to college, but apparently she skips classes all the time, which winds my parents up no end. Theyre convinced shes a bad influence on my brother and is distracting him from doing well.
On top of that, it doesnt help that Chloes sometimes quite blunt and dresses in a way my parents think is pretty sloppydefinitely not how they expect a young woman to present herself. Her own family arent big fans of the relationship, either, and dont really want her and my brother spending time at their place. Even after theyd been together for two years, there wasnt anything about Chloe that changed my parents minds.
My brother, being properly stubborn, didnt want to hear a word against Chloe. He flat out told our parents he wasnt about to give her up just because they disapproved. I honestly didnt have strong feelings about Chloe one way or another, but I was worried the whole situation was just making things tense at home. Since my brother still lived with us, and Chloe was living with her mum, stepdad, and little sister, he even suggested she move in with usinto his room, no less, because they cant afford to live anywhere on their own.
Things got properly awkward after that. My dad started making snide comments, saying things like, How do you expect to live in an empty room with no proper furniture? and then insisting that my brother would have to pay for everything. My brother wasnt having any of ithe demanded his share of the house, stuffed some things into a rucksack, and stormed out. For a couple of weeks, he and Chloe sofa-surfed, going from mate to mate, and eventually came back, both absolutely determined to stick together whatever happened.
Then my brother really dropped everyone in it by saying hed sell his share of the house, and hinted hed even cut ties if my parents didnt accept Chloe. That completely set things off. He stormed out again after a big row, and I got the feeling Chloes mum, who apparently knows her way around legal stuff, might have pushed him in that direction. I tried to mediate and calm things down, but both my parents and my brother just told me to keep my nose out.
Honestly, its been a nightmare. I just really hope, with a bit of time and some proper conversations, maybe well find a way to get the family back on track.
