My Parents Promised Us a Generous Cash Gift If I Got Pregnant—But Over Time, My Husband and I Realized We’d Been Deceived

Im an only child, though apparently I was long-awaited but honestly, it never really felt like I was especially loved. When I was 23, and five months pregnant, I started doubting if I was even my parents biological daughter. My parents are in their seventies now, and our financial situation is dire. We rent a flat, forever scraping by with barely enough to cover the bills. My husband and I are both students and we work as well, but its never quite enough. Weve narrowly avoided eviction twice because we couldnt pay the rent and have had to borrow money from friends just to get by. As a result, were pretty deep in debt and can hardly afford food most weeks. Sometimes my parents help us out with groceries when things are especially tight.
My parents were really keen for us to get married, so a year ago, we just went ahead and tied the knot at the registry office. After that, my parents started dropping hints about wanting grandchildren. My mum kept going on about how I really needed to have a child now, so I wouldnt end up an old parent like she did. But honestly, we didnt feel even vaguely ready for kids yet, not with the kind of financial responsibility that comes with it.
Then, out of the blue, my parents came up with this tempting offer. They said if I had a baby, theyd give us a sizeable chunk of money enough for us to buy a place in the countryside. They said theyd move out there, and we could have their flat in the city. We thought long and hard about it and, in the end, it genuinely seemed like a good deal for us. We wouldnt have to worry about rent anymore, and whatever was left over could go towards our own needs. Mum promised shed help look after the baby while I went on with my studies.
They even said theyd help us financially and get everything wed need for the baby and me. But in reality, they didnt keep a single promise. They didnt buy a single nappy. During my pregnancy, Mum would call up regularly, asking about preparations for the babys arrival, but we were completely broke I couldnt even afford basics like tiny baby clothes. She suggested my husband take on a third job just to cover the extra costs. Id remind her about their promise to help us out, but she flat-out denied ever saying anything of the kind and started having a go at us, calling us irresponsible.
When my daughter was born, of course my parents suddenly remembered the whole money business. But by then, my husband and I decided wed just save up and buy our own place, because we finally realised we couldnt rely on them for anything.
