My Parents Promised Us a Large Sum of Money If I Got Pregnant, But Over Time My Husband and I Realised We’d Been Deceived

Im an only child, though I was apparently long-awaited, but I dont feel particularly loved. When I was 23, in my fifth month of pregnancy, I started to wonder if I was truly my parents biological daughter. My parents are now in their seventies, and our financial situation is dire. We live in a rented flat, barely scraping by. My husband and I are both students with part-time jobs, but its nowhere near enough to cover our costs. Weve faced eviction twice for being unable to keep up with rent, having to borrow money from friends. As a result, were deep in debt, struggling to afford basic groceries, and constantly worrying about money. Sometimes my parents help out by bringing us food.
They were quite keen for us to get married, so last year we didnt hesitate and went straight to the registry office to tie the knot. It was after this that my parents started talking about wanting grandchildren.
My mum would often remind me that I needed to have a child soon, otherwise, like her, Id end up an older parent. Still, my husband and I didnt feel readywe both understood the heavy financial burden that comes with raising a child. Thats when my parents pitched us an irresistible offer: they promised that if I had a baby, they would give us a large sum of money so we could buy a cottage in the countryside. They would then move out to the country as well, and wed get to keep our flat in the city. We thought it over and realised it would solve so many of our problems. No more worrying about rent, and the extra money could go towards our needs. Mum assured me shed take care of the baby so I could finish my studies.
They also promised financial help and support to buy all the things needed for me and the baby. But when the time came, my parents didnt follow through on a single promisenot even one nappy was bought. My mum would often ring during my pregnancy to ask about how I was preparing for the birth, while I could barely afford the most basic things, like clothes for the baby. She even suggested my husband take a third job to help cover the expenses. I reminded her of their promise to support us, but she flatly denied ever making such an offer, and criticised the choices we were making, calling us irresponsible.
When my daughter was born, my parents suddenly remembered the money, but by then my husband and I had decided we’d buy a flat ourselves, realising at last that we couldnt rely on their support at all.
