I married three years ago, and everything seemed perfect until the wedding itself. After we got married, my husband underwent a complete changehe became distant and utterly indifferent towards me. It felt as though I was invisible, with even my smallest requests falling on deaf ears. During my pregnancy, I longed for his support and care, but instead, he responded with coldness and even harsh words. In his family, theres a longstanding tradition of expecting a wife to submit to her husband’s relatives, especially his mother.
His parents would constantly belittle me, shouting and criticising without reason, and my husband never once defended or supported me. He would always take their side, insisting that they were responsible for teaching me the ropes and faulting me for everything. Whenever I tried to stand up for myself, matters only grew worse. In one particularly awful incident, my mother-in-law lashed out physically and locked me in the cellar for three days, displaying a level of disdain and cruelty I could hardly bear. My father-in-law joined in as well, criticising me at every turn for reasons I could never quite grasp. I was left feeling guilty for everything, never truly understanding what I had done wrong.
Lately, the thought of divorce has been on my mind, as I simply can’t go on living under the constant judgment and control of his family. I had dreamed of creating a loving and respectful family, one where understanding and support truly matter. Instead, every encounter with his family ends in heated arguments, and I cannot endure their insults in silence any longer.
I have often found myself hoping and even praying for my husband to change, wishing he would become once again the caring man I thought I had married. I cannot tolerate the way he lets his family treat me, and I truly believe that mutual respect and understanding are the foundations of any home. Two months ago, I told my husband I wanted us to live separately, but he flatly refused. This led to a bitter argument, and eventually, I left. My mother-in-law went as far as spreading rumours, claiming my husband had thrown me out for being disobedient and impossible to live with.
Yesterday, my husband contacted me and asked me to come back. Perhaps he now realises the mistakes he made. I am torn, unsure of the right path forward or how I should proceed in this difficult situation. My heart is caught between the hope for a positive change and the urge to break free from this cycle of mistreatment.
Ive come to realise that, no matter how strong our hopes for others might be, we must value ourselves enough to demand the respect and kindness we deserve. Sometimes, the bravest choice we can make is to stand our ground and choose our own wellbeing above others expectations.
