My Sister Wants Me to Leave Our Shared Flat Because She’s Having a Baby—Is It Reasonable to Be Asked…

7 April 2024

Theres something I simply have to get off my chest today.

Many years ago, Mum and Dad bought a two-bedroom flat in London for my sister and me. Their plan was that one day we could sell it and each buy our own one-bedroom placeone for me, one for my sister. Straightforward enough, and it gave me something to look forward to.

Later, my sister Sarah met a bloke and eventually married him. She asked if Id mind if the two of them moved in with me in our flat. I thought it would be fine, so I agreed.

At first, things were perfectly all right. But as soon as Sarah found out she was expecting, everything changed. Now, both she and her husband keep telling me I should move out, so their baby can have my room. Apparently, the spare room is destined for a nursery, and my things are being discussed as though Im just a temporary guest. I keep being told casually about which shade of yellow the babys room will be painted. Not once am I truly included in the conversation, or asked how I feel. Its as though I havent been living here for years.

The thing is, I own half of this place, with all the rights that come with it. Im still at uni, and my only means of support are a scholarship and a part-time job at a little café. My wages barely cover food, let alone rent somewhere else in London. I just dont see why I should be expected to rent a place I cant afford when I rightfully have a home.

At first Sarah hinted that maybe I could move out, but now she talks about it directly, as if its a foregone conclusion. Shes started making plans for the baby as if Id already promised to leave, discussing cot arrangements and wall colours with utter certainty.

I brought all this up to my parents. Mum just had a laugh and said, Pregnant women can be a bit much, itll pass. Dont take Sarah too seriously. But how can I just shrug it off when, day after day, Im being subtly, then not-so-subtly, nudged out of my own home?

Now I feel like a stranger under my own roof. Sarah doesnt seem to care how this affects me at all. Im honestly at a loss for what my next step should be.

Looking back on all of this, I suppose what Im learning is how important it is to stand up for your own rights, even when it means disappointing someone you love. Maybe itll all work itself outbut for now, I have to remember that my needs matter, too.
