My Son Told Me He Bought Me a Country House – But When I Arrived, I Felt the Ground Give Way Beneath Me.

My son told me hed bought me a cottage in the countrysidebut when I arrived, the ground dropped from beneath my feet.

My name is William, and Im 78 years old.

I never thought Id be asking strangers for advice, yet here I am. I need your perspective.

Most of my adult life was spent as a single father. My wife, Eleanor, died of cancer when our son, James (now 35), was just ten.

It was a brutal time for us both, but we weathered it together. From then on, it was just the two of us against the world. I tried to be both mother and father to him, working myself to the bone to give him every opportunity in life.

James grew into a good man. Of course, he had his rebellious moments, but on the whole, he was kind, hardworking, and level-headed. He excelled in school, earned a partial scholarship to university, and landed a solid job in finance after graduation.

Id always been fiercely proud of him, watching him flourish into a successful adult. We stayed close even after he moved outspeaking weekly, sharing Sunday roasts without fail.

Dad, he said, unable to meet my eyes. Im sorry. I know I told you it was a cottage, but this is better for you. Theyll look after you here.

Look after me? I dont need looking after! Im perfectly capable. Why would you lie to me?

Dad, please. Finally, he looked at me, his eyes pleading.

Lately, youve been forgetting things. I worry about you living alone. This place has excellent facilitiestherell always be someone nearby if you need help.

Forgetting things? Everyone forgets things sometimes! I shouted, hot tears streaking my cheeks.

Thats not true, James. Take me home. Now.

James shook his head, then delivered the worst blow of all:

I cant, Dad. I Ive already sold the house.

The words knocked the breath from my lungs.

Id agreed to the sale, yesbut I thought there was time left. I wanted to meet the new owners, to choose the right family, to explain how to care for the old oak in the garden.

Thats why what happened a little over a year ago had stunned me. It was a Tuesday evening when James turned up at my door, buzzing with excitement.

Dad, he said, Ive got brilliant news! Ive bought you a cottage in the Cotswolds!

A cottage? James, what on earth are you on about?

Its perfect, Dad. Quiet, peacefuljust what you need. Youll love it!

I was taken aback. Move away? It felt too drastic.

James, you shouldnt have. Im fine here.

But he insisted.

No, Dad, you deserve this. The house is too big for just you. Its time for a change. Trust meyoull be happy there.

Ill admit, I was sceptical. The house wed lived in had been our family home for over thirty years. James had grown up there; Eleanor and I had built our life within those walls. But my son seemed so sure, so convinced it was the right move. And I trusted him completely.

After all, wed always been honest with each other.

So, despite my doubts, I agreedto the move, to selling the house. In the days that followed, I packed my things while James handled the arrangements. He assured me everything was in hand, so thorough that I let my worries fade.

Then came the day of the move. As we drove, James chattered about the cottages features, but the further we got from London, the heavier the knot in my stomach grew.

The landscape grew barren. This wasnt the idyllic countryside Id picturedno rolling hills or quaint villages. Instead, empty fields stretched endlessly, broken only by the shell of an abandoned farmhouse.

The cottages Id once admired, back when Eleanor was still with me, had been warm, welcoming, nestled in nature. This was nothing like that.

James, I asked, are you sure this is the right way? This doesnt look like the Cotswolds.

He assured me we were on track, but I noticed he couldnt hold my gaze.

After an hour, we turned onto a winding lane. At the end stood a grim, towering building. My heart stopped as I read the sign: *Sunset Haven.*

This wasnt a cottage.

It was a care home.
