My Son Won’t Talk to Me Anymore… When Did He Become a Stranger?

My son no longer speaks to me… and I don’t know when he became a stranger to me.

I have only one son—my flesh and blood, my pride and joy. He’s thirty now, and I’m sixty-one. I’ve devoted my life to him, working myself to exhaustion, losing sleep, praying for his happiness. He’s from my first marriage. Now he has his own family—a wife and, not long ago, a darling baby girl, my granddaughter. You’d think I should be overjoyed, living just across the courtyard from them. But instead… we barely speak anymore.

Before my granddaughter was born, things were different. My son and I were close. He’d drop by often, ask my advice, or just come round for tea and a heart-to-heart. I felt needed. Now there’s a wall between us. He’s distant, as if I’ve betrayed him somehow. I sense his resentment, but I don’t understand why.

I’ve tried gently asking him—he stays silent. I’ve asked his wife—she just says, “Work it out between yourselves.” But how, when he avoids every attempt?

When he was little, he was often ill. I carried the burden alone. My second husband was kind but passive. My son never accepted him as a father, and he never pushed the matter. All the discipline, all the worry—it fell on me. I was both mother and father. We weathered storms—bad influences, suspicions of drugs, teenage rebellion. I had to be firm, not out of cruelty, but fear of losing him. I wasn’t perfect, but I never gave up on him.

Yet now, it seems our rift began over something trivial. I asked him for help with my computer—those updates and programs confuse me. He used to help without a fuss. This time, he sighed, called his wife, and walked out without a word. He didn’t even take the scones I’d baked. Since then—silence.

At first, I thought he’d come round. But weeks turned to months. Nothing. He doesn’t even tell me when he travels abroad—I hear it from others. I only see my granddaughter when his wife brings her. She’s polite but distant, never saying more than necessary. When I ask about my son, she replies, “That’s not my place. You two should talk.”

I’ve stopped calling—afraid of seeming pushy. I thought if I gave him space, he’d miss me. Instead, the silence grows heavier, as if my quiet only pushes him further away.

The cruelest part isn’t anger or blame—it’s the indifference. As if I no longer exist. He doesn’t visit, call, or ask how I am. He didn’t even check on me when I was hospitalised—his wife only mentioned it in passing.

I don’t understand. I never scolded, never meddled, never imposed. I helped when asked, lent money, offered support. Don’t I deserve even a simple conversation?

I lie awake, replaying every word, every moment, searching for where I went wrong. Did I overlook something? Hurt him without realising? Or am I just… no longer needed?

They say children grow distant. But not like this—not in icy silence. I’m not a stranger. I’m his mother.

Now, memories of him cut like glass. I look at old photos, his childhood drawings, and can’t believe the boy who once laughed with me now shuts me out like an enemy.

I don’t ask for much—no gifts, no grand gestures. Just his presence. His voice. A simple, “Hello, Mum.”

What do I do? How do I reach him when he’s decided to walk away? What do I say when he won’t listen? Or do I accept this silence—and if so, how do I live with a heart that aches for the child who acts as though I’m already gone?

Perhaps love means knowing when to hold on—and when to let go, even if it breaks you.
