My wife was asleep right beside me, blissfully snoring awayand out of nowhere, my phone pinged with a Facebook notification. Some woman wanted to add me as a friend.
Well, curiosity got the better of me, so I accepted her request.
I messaged straight away, channeling my inner Sherlock: Do we know each other?
She replied, I heard youre married now, but I still love you.
Turns out, she was an old flame. Looked rather stunning in her profile photo, I must admit.
But then, I closed the chat window and looked over at my wife. She was curled up next to me, exhausted after slogging through another long day in the office.
As I watched her sleep so peacefullycompletely at ease in our new flatI started thinking. Shes miles away from her parents house, where she used to spend every waking moment with her family. When she was upset or down, her mum would be there for a comforting cry and a cup of tea. Her brother or sister would crack silly jokes and make her giggle. Her dad would come home and spoil her with her favourite treats. And yet here she was, putting all her trust in me.
All these thoughts tumbled through my head. So, without a seconds hesitation, I grabbed my phone and hit BLOCK.
I rolled over and went to sleep next to her.
After all, Im a grown man, not a hapless schoolboy. I made vows. Ill always fight to be a loyal husband, not someone who breaks promises or families.
