My wife was sleeping beside me and suddenly, I received a notification on Facebook. A woman had sent me a friend request.
So, I accepted.
After adding her, I sent a message: Do we know each other?
She replied, I heard you’ve gotten married, but I still love you.
She was a friend from long ago. In her profile picture, she looked rather lovely.
I closed the chat and glanced over at my wife, who lay peacefully beside me, sleeping soundly after a long, tiring day at work.
Watching her, I thought about how safe she must feel to rest so soundly here in our home together.
She was far from her parents house now, where she had spent every hour surrounded by her family. When she was upset or sad, her mother comforted her, a shoulder to cry on. Her sister or brother would tell a joke, making her laugh. Her father would come home bearing little treats she always enjoyed. And yet, here she was, having placed all her trust in me.
With these thoughts swirling in my mind, I picked up my phone and pressed BLOCK.
I turned to her, pulled the covers about us, and drifted off to sleep at her side.
I am a man, not a child. I swore her my loyalty, and I shall keep that vow. For as long as I live, I will fight to remain the man who does not betray his wife, nor destroy the family we are building together.
