Nastya, take her away! I can’t take it anymore! I can’t even stand to touch her!

Claire, take her! I just cant do it anymore! I cant even stand touching her!
Elizabeth was shaking. The baby in her arms was screaming her little lungs out.
Claire gently took her niece into her own arms and nodded.
Alright. But this is your choiceyou wont have any regrets later, will you?
No, what regrets? Take her, I dont want her at all!
The baby had only entered the world a month ago. Something had been wrong with Elizabeth from early pregnancy. Claire chalked up her mood swings to the late stage of pregnancy. Elizabeth had been widowed for over seven years. Her older children were adults, living their own lives now. A holiday to Brighton, a brief romance, and an unexpected pregnancy surprised everyone. Elizabeth had never been impulsive. At first, it seemed as though Elizabeth was happy to be expecting. But then Claire noticed her sister alternating between buying every baby item possible, searching for prams, and suddenly withdrawing into herself for weeks at a time as if shed walled herself off.
Just before the birth, Elizabeth stopped speaking to her familyno calls to their mother, Claire, or even her own children. Concerned, Claire tracked her down at the hospital, where Elizabeth was planning to sign over her parental rights.
Elizabeth, whats going on? Why?
I just dont know. I dont feel anything. Shes a stranger.
How can you say that? Shes your baby!
She wont be mine, Elizabeth said, turning her face to the wall.
Claire brought in the big guns and fetched their mother. Elizabeth finally agreed to bring the baby home. Their mum insisted Elizabeth move in for a while under the pretext of helping with the baby, but really, everyone was keeping an eye on her. Elizabeth looked after the infant out of duty, never lingering longer than she had to, never holding her unless she absolutely must. The babys name was chosen by her gran; her aunt carried her everywhere.
Elizabeth, Ill take her. Ill raise herbut a little time from now, who do you think shell call mum?
I dont care. As long as its not me.
Within a week, the papers were signed and Claire officially became her nieces guardian. Elizabeth left for another city.
Little Sophie grew into a bright, bubbly child. She walked and talked early. She called Claire mum.
Twelve years slipped by.
Mum, I got three top marks today at school, and tomorrow were off to the cinema with my class! Sophies cheerful voice rang through the flat.
Is that her?
Yes, Elizabeth, it’s her. Im asking you
Hello! Im Sophie, who are you?
A tall girl with wide blue eyes stood in the kitchen doorway, glancing between the pale woman at the table and the mother standing by the window, looking chalk-white.
Im Elizabeth. Im your mother, Sophie.
I asked you not to! Claire burst out in frustration, stepping quickly to her daughter. Sophie! Ill explain everything
No need, mum. Lets hear her out. Well? You say youre my mother. And?
Ive come to take you home. I want you to live with me.
Why?
Youre my daughter.
No, Im not. I have a mum, and shes right here. I dont need another. And honestly, I hope this is both the first and last time I see you. Sophie turned and calmly left the kitchen.
Claire slumped onto a chair.
What did you achieve?
Nothing yet. But I will. Trust me. Ill go through the courts if I must.
Why are you doing this? You handed her over, you didnt want to see her at all. No one ever understood why you did what you did. And now, all these years on, you show up expecting her to throw her arms round you? Sorry, Elizabeth. You can go stay with Mum. Well talk later. I need to go to my daughter.
Niece! Elizabeth retorted, getting up.
Claire only sighed. She closed the door and made her way to Sophies room.
Sophie, sweetheart
Mum, wait. Before you say anythingI want you to know, I found out last year when we were cleaning at Grans. I found the guardianship papers. At first I was furious that you hadnt told me. Then I wanted to meet her, to askwhy? And then I realised I didnt need any of that. You are my mum. I dont need anyone else!
Oh, Sophie, my darling girl! Ill never let you go.
And I wouldnt let myself go either, Sophie chuckled. Do you remember my classmate, Oliver? Call his mum, shes a solicitor, family laws her specialty.
Well now, darling, dont be in such a rush to grow up. Deciding everything on your own! Im still the grown-up, and the mum, for now, at least! Claire laughed and pulled the girl into her arms. Well call her, of course. Well sort everything out.
There followed weeks of nerves and courts, but the judge decided things should stay as they were, considering Sophie made it absolutely clear she would not live with her birth mother.
The two sisters stood outside the courthouse.
Well, thats it, thank goodness this nightmare is finally over. Claire breathed out. What are you going to do now?
Ill leave, Claire. I wont get in the way. But Ill helptheres an account already for Sophie, documents with Mum, I left it all for her.
Why, Elizabeth? Why did you leave her in the first place?
There was no romance, Clairenothing like that. It was a dark park, late at night.
Claire gasped.
And you never told anyone? All these years you kept it to yourself?
There was nothing I could do to change it. So I kept quiet. I didnt even realise I was pregnant at firstthought it was early menopause. By the time I knew, it was too late. Please dont tell Sophie. Let her live as she is. Its my life, not hers. Maybe one day shell forgive me.
Claire hugged her sister, and together they gazed at Sophie, who was standing with her grandmother a little way off.
Sometimes the worst things life can throw at you turn out to bring the most beauty. Shes such a wonderful girl! Elizabeth dabbed at her eyes, and for the first time in years, Claire saw her sister smile.
In the end, family is not just about blood, but about care, support, and choosing to be there for one another despite lifes hardest trials.
