Id just stepped out of the gym and noticed Id missed seven calls from Mum. Thats quite unusual, so I checked my texts right away and saw a message: Call me back! Even though it was nearly eleven, I decided I ought to ring her Mum can be rather anxious and will stay up all night worrying about the smallest thing.
When she answered, Mum sounded tearful, telling me something had happened she thought the wedding might be off.
My sister, Charlotte, is only twenty-three. Shes an ambitious and talented designer, just graduated last year, and immediately landed a good job. While she was studying, she worked part-time, and after finishing uni, the company where she interned took her on right away. Charlottes personal life was almost picture-perfect, or at least it was until that night.
For over a year, Charlotte had been dating Oliver. Hes three years older, lives on his own, works hard, and saves for a home. He came across as polite and well brought-up.
Charlotte and Oliver had already booked their wedding at the registry office. There were only a few weeks left to go.
Later, Charlotte told me that someone had messaged her out of the blue on social media, saying: We dont know each other, but I know you quite well. I think you should hear this before the wedding Charlotte had checked her profile the woman looked to be around forty. So what could she possibly know?
The stranger didnt let it go though and kept sending messages from various accounts. Eventually, they arranged to meet at a café near Charlottes work. While Charlotte was sitting, waiting, a pregnant woman came in. At first, Charlotte didnt think it was her, but was surprised when the woman approached her table.
Youre Charlotte? My names Emily. Ive been seeing Oliver for over a year, and were having a baby boy in four months.
Of course, my sister didnt believe it for a second. It sounded absurd! Charlotte had been with Oliver for over a year, and they were about to get married. Emily didnt push or try to argue, just got up to leave. On the way out, she gave Charlotte her phone number, saying she could call anytime if she had questions. She also mentioned she was happy to speak with Oliver.
And what did Oliver say? Well, this is where everything began unraveling. Charlotte had made it clear that she wanted to wait until marriage for anything intimate. They went out, kissed, and hugged, but that was it. Charlotte didnt have any experience.
Oliver, on the other hand, wasnt lacking in experience. He grew impatient and decided to have a no-strings-attached affair to satisfy himself. He met Emily somewhere, told her up front it wouldnt be anything serious and that he wasnt planning to settle down with her. At first, Emily was fine with that shed recently divorced, has a child already, gets a decent child maintenance, and works. The arrangement suited her because she realised there was quite a difference in their ages.
Oliver told Charlotte that once the baby was born, hed take a paternity test. If the child was his, hed help out, but insisted it was Charlottes fault, saying he was a healthy young man and her old fashioned principles drove him to it.
Now Olivers begging Charlotte not to leave him because he loves her and only turned to Emily for physical reasons. According to Oliver, if Charlotte had been less naïve, Emily wouldnt have entered the picture.
Oliver said hell support the child if its his, but doesnt plan to be involved beyond that. Emily wanted to keep the baby, so Oliver offered money for other options, but she refused. Now its her situation to deal with.
Im left wondering: is Oliver at fault here or not? Did his masculinity really get the better of him, or should Charlotte run from a fiancé like this? Is a lack of intimacy ever an excuse for betrayal?
Todays events have shown me honesty and loyalty mean everything. When those are missing, it doesnt matter how polite someone is or how promising their life seems; trust is all that holds relationships together.
