“Now Half of Your Property Belongs to Me,” Declared the Eccentric Woman.

So, let me tell you about this couple who had a really wonderful life. They got married when they were both 30, and not long after, their son was born. They built a lovely family together, had enough money to live comfortably, bought a flat in London, and turned their old country cottage near Oxford into a beautiful, cosy home with all the mod-cons. They enjoyed holidays abroad, discovered new places, and her husband was never distracted by anyone elsehe was always loyal, and she knew it.

Time went on, and their son grew up and married a sweet English girlher name was Emily, I think. They were only in their early 20s, which made her smile because it was just like her and her husband, but a decade earlier. As a wedding gift, the parents bought the young couple a small flat of their own.

Life felt perfect. The woman was genuinely happybut, as the years passed, perhaps with age or old wives tales floating around, she sometimes felt uneasy, like something might come along and spoil their happiness.

And, wouldnt you know, life took an unexpected turn.

Her husband died.

It took her ages to come to terms with it. Shed always been a homemaker before, but eventually, she found the strength to pick herself up and returned to work. It took time, but she managed.

Everyone kept saying she had to sort out the inheritance papers. So, off she went with her son to the solicitors office for the will. She didnt fully get whyit just seemed obvious that half of everything was hers, and the other half would go to her son, right? Her husbands parents had passed away ages ago, so aside from her and her son, she didnt think there was anyone else in the picture.

Anyway, when she got there, the solicitor ushered her into the office, and there was another woman sitting at the table. Someone shed never seen before.

Apparently, half of her husbands estate was left to this stranger.

She just stared, first at the solicitor and then at this womanshe looked about fifty, a bit plain, definitely older, which made her wonder what on earth her husband had to do with her.

Then the solicitor explained: There was an old will drawn up 27 years ago that had never been replaced or cancelled, so by law, it still stood.

This woman… it was such a weird twist.

Back when they were youngbarely out of universitytheyd fallen head over heels for each other, like something out of a rom-com. It was first love for both, and he truly cherished her. He used to tease her, saying, “You’re my child,” even though they were the same age, and shed laugh.

One night while watching some film where the main characters wrote wills leaving everything to each other, they laughed and decided to do the same”All thats mine is yours, for ever and ever.” She joked it was just a piece of paper, but he insisted they make it official at the solicitor’s, and they didafterwards celebrating with champagne and a passionate evening.

Not long after, though, life happened. His father fell gravely ill, and he took his mum to France for treatment. The girl started seeing someone else and found herself pregnant. Her family nudged her toward marriageher first love stopped replying to her letters. She got married, left for Manchester for her husbands new job, had a daughter, but the marriage didn’t work out, and they divorced.

At some point, she remembered the will, but shed already written a new one leaving everything to her daughter.

Then, ages later, she got a letter out of the bluean official one. Shed practically forgotten her old flame ever existed. Then she saw his name and all those feelings came rushing back.

He, on the other hand, had totally forgotten about the will. After his father died and his mother fell ill, his old sweetheart married someone else and moved. He decided it was best to forget her, met his future wifenot a romantic connection, really, but he appreciated her practical nature. They had a good life together.

What more could the poor widow do? She looked at the situation and asked, “Is she really going to take half?”

So strange, she kept thinkinga sign of how much he must have loved her once. She decided to accept it, taking it as a piece of his past, a memory, to hold onto.

Well, half is mine now, said the woman. Not just any half eitherthe London flat, the cottage, the car, the bank accounts.

The widows heart nearly stopped. First her husband was ripped away, and now this? It felt like betrayal, somehow.

All those years together, not once did he mention this woman.

And now she had to hand over so much money…

She even went so far as to take it to court, but nothing changedjust a lot of stress and sleepless nights.

In the end, the money went to the old flame.

She bought herself a new flat and took her daughter for a holiday by the seaside.

Every day, she just whispered thank you, trying to hold onto some sense of gratitude despite it all.
