One day I met Alice on the street; she was standing at my door with tears streaming down her face. I instantly invited her inside, and as we sat down to talk, she revealed that something terrible had happened—planned by my own mother.

Forbidden love can be a painful experience, and sadly, I find myself living through one right nowthough in my case, things are even more tangled than most. It all began in my second year at university when I fell head over heels for a wonderful girl named Charlotte. She was beautiful, clever, and kind-hearted, but my mother couldnt look past the fact that Charlottes family came from modest roots. Mum was convinced that Charlotte wasnt good enough for me and insisted I should be with someone who matched our social standing.

Despite my mothers disapproval, I continued seeing Charlotte, determined to let nothing get in the way. Then, one day, I got a letter from her. In it, Charlotte said the pressure from my mum had become unbearable, and so shed decided to break up with me. The news was crushing. I had a heated argument with my mother and made up my mind to move out, desperate to escape her interference and assert my independence. Still, my heart clung to Charlotte, and I couldnt wrap my head around how she could just leave me like that.

Then, on a grey afternoon, as I was taking out the rubbish, I spotted Charlotte waiting for me at my doorstep, her face streaked with tears. Worried about her, I welcomed her inside to warm up and have a chat. Thats when she confided in me. It turned out that my mum had skilfully orchestrated the whole mess. She had penned a letter pretending to be Charlotte, breaking things off with me and claiming Id found someone else and moved in with her.

Once the truth came out, Charlotte and I rekindled our relationship, choosing to ignore the expectations about status and class. We found comfort in one anothers arms, certain that our love was stronger than any judgment from others. Since that moment, weve gone through life side by side, hand in hand, never allowing outside opinions to dictate our happiness.
