My daughter married an Englishman. I lived with them for two years, looking after my grandson and taking care of their home.
Both my daughter and her husband worked at the same company and would arrive home in the evenings. I had hoped I could stay with them for good, but it turned out my hopes were misplaced. One day, my son-in-law told me that they no longer needed my help and asked me to leave their flat. A month later, I was back at my own place. As it turned out, I wasnt particularly welcome there either. While Id been away, my son had separated from his first wife, left her flat, and moved into mine.
He brought along his new wife, who was already expecting a baby. He never even thought to ask for my permission.
What was I supposed to do? Throw my son and his pregnant wife out? Of course not. But how are the three of us, soon to be four, meant to live together in a tiny one-bedroom flat? By the way, neither my son nor I can afford to rent somewhere else. I rang my daughter up and explained what was going on. I hoped they might understand and at least call me back, but they never did. Its a pity, but theres nothing I can dothey see things differently
As for my sons behaviour, I suppose its easy enough to see why things turned out this way. He never expected Id come back. Now Im left to sleep on the sofa in the kitchen. During the day, I usually go out; I do the shopping, or pop round to my old job to see my friends. I speak to my son as usual, without any arguments, but my daughter-in-law ignores me completely. Its obvious she isnt pleased that Im there.
I never thought that at sixty Id find myself unwanted, with another woman ruling my own home. My sons priority is his pregnant wife, and it seems the awkwardness of our living situation barely crosses his mind.
Im searching for a part-time job now. My daughter-in-laws parents live out in the countryside. Perhaps I should ask her to move in with them for a while? But would my son be able to find work out there? I doubt it. I just cant decide what to do
Sometimes life doesnt go the way we expect, and even the warmest hearts can feel left out. But perhaps the real lesson here is that while our families may grow and change in ways we never imagined, its kindness, understanding, and a bit of compromise that keep a home togetherno matter whos under the roof.
