Ill tell you how it all went down, right here in London, and why I never expected the turn it took.
Youre leaving me! I heard her shout, and my gut feeling about Oliver was suddenly proved right shed never really known the man shed married. Fine, if thats how it is, get out! You cant force anyone to stay.
Hold on, theres more, Oliver blurted, his voice shaking. Sophie and I will take the girls with us. They deserve a proper mum and dad.
I first met Oliver through some friends, and the moment I saw him I liked his quiet, slightly bewildered air. He seemed out of step with the confident, selfassured blokes Id encountered before, who all seemed to have the worlds hard truths nailed down.
We talked the whole evening, and I was fascinated, until Lucy, a mate whod invited Alexandra to her birthday, slipped away to the loo and whispered, Watch him, love hes got a trailer attached.
What do you mean, a trailer? I asked, puzzled.
Literal, Lucy said. Hes got two kids.
Two kids? I repeated, because nobody had mentioned any children, let alone a wife. As it turned out, his wife had vanished not really a wife, just a lover hed been planning to marry. Shed run off, leaving him to look after twin girls, now being raised by him and his own mother.
Now thats a trick! I thought, grinning at Shirley. A real catch, that man hes a rarity these days! No wonder he seemed flustered; anyone would be if things got that tangled.
Why didnt you tell me about the daughters? I asked Oliver as he walked back into the room.
Because it scares people, he said after a brief pause, honesty in his tone. Youll probably run off too, and I dont want that.
I wont run, I promised. I realised I wasnt keen on fleeing either, and I stuck to my word.
Oliver escorted me home, and we agreed to meet again. He was genuinely taken with the pretty Alexandra, and even his threeyearold twins didnt faze him.
My mum kicked me out when Lucy invited me to her birthday, Oliver explained later. She said I was going to go off the rails. Raising kids isnt exactly a party.
His mothers reaction made sense his former fiancée had fled a year earlier, leaving the twins to fend for themselves. Hed taken them in, a sort of civic duty in our times.
Alexandra soon saw that Olivers quiet, slightly odd, singlefather vibe appealed to her. By twentyfive shed already survived a disastrous marriage that never turned into anything more than a wild student fling. The wedding itself hadnt brought happiness.
Their relationship was all sunshine while they were still students, but once they moved in after registering the marriage, their opposing worldviews clashed.
What now? many would say. Divorce? The answer, of course, is to learn to compromise.
Shirley started to bend because Oliver refused to budge my word is law! hed say.
Fine then, I heard her reply, the wife should fear her husband! Yet everything Oliver said turned out not to be what shed expected.
After university, Alexandra landed a job straight away, but Oliver couldnt find a suitable position. Every opening either clashed with his schedule, had a dimwitted boss, or just didnt fit. Nothing I want is here! hed mutter.
Meanwhile, carefree Ian, whod once been a riot, settled at home. Weve got enough, love, hed say. Their grandma had left Alexandra a modest council flat far from the fairytale shed imagined. Ian did nothing around the house, which Alexandra likened to a kings idle duties.
Get yourself a servant, Your Majesty! she snapped, fed up with dragging his mess. Or hire a cleaning service!
She realised shed jumped onto the wrong horse. Not only had she not reached a finish line, she hadnt even left the starting gate. Ian turned out to be a dud, a halfbaked pastry.
The spurned husband went back to his mother, and Sasha thats what I call Alexandra spent three years avoiding any man. Then Oliver appeared again, and not only that he soon proposed and introduced his charming twins and his mother, Zoe.
Sasha realised she wanted a life with them; by then she was head over heels. Their home was a mess, but that was understandable a promising girl had been staring down the barrel of despair, not under duress but of her own volition.
Didnt think youd turn out like this! her mother shouted. Why chase after any old bloke? There are decent men out there!
Mom, Olivers perfectly normal, Sasha replied weakly.
Of course hes normal, her father retorted. Hell soon hang his ownwell, you know! He warned her of what lay ahead.
Whats ahead for me? Sasha asked. If Id had twins, what would happen then?
Nothing like that! her father roared. Your own kids are one thing, other peoples are another. Mum ran off, but you cant rewrite genetics!
Sasha wondered why the kids would grow up withissues. She imagined a normal, full family with both dad and mum, believing that upbringing mattered as much as DNA.
Neither the brides parents nor the grooms showed up at the wedding; the grooms mother stayed home with the grandchildren. The ceremony was modest a few drinks in a café with witnesses, then off they went.
After the nuptials, Oliver, the man with the trailer, moved into the council flat. Soon they had three boys, as Sasha gave birth to a shared daughter. Gradually the grandparents thawed out, and the families started getting along, sharing responsibilities without letting the children become a point of friction. The older twins went to nursery, while the youngest was looked after by the grandmothers. The inlaws even became friends.
Olivers first wife lost parental rights the grandparents and the stepmum pushed hard, shouting threats. They never managed to claim child support, as Sophie vanished for good. Perhaps that was a blessing.
The girls knew Shirley wasnt their birth mother; theyd glimpsed faint memories of another mum, so there was no point in hiding the truth. Time passed, the daughters grew, bringing joy to everyone. Sasha and Oliver settled into a normal, working family.
When the girls turned fourteen, the first wife turned up as if nothing had happened, as though the twelve years of disappearance meant nothing. Oliver came back from the shop looking dazed, an empty bag in hand hed run into Sophie.
What Sophie? Sasha asked, forgetting shed ever known a Sophie.
My Sophie! Oliver replied. The word my cut deep. Who was she now? A flicker of unease rose in Shirley.
Whered you see her?
At the corner shop.
What was she doing? Just standing there?
Just standing, I think
Shirley muttered, Just standing? Was she waiting for something? What will happen to her?
What did she say? Did she say anything?
Well, she did, Oliver mumbled reluctantly.
What? Why should I have to pull every secret out of you?
It turned out Oliver had rediscovered his great love Sophie, the candysweet girl whod never changed. She was the spark lighting up his otherwise bleak existence. Hed never stopped loving her.
Sasha, meanwhile, felt the world tilt. Sophie claimed shed finally gotten her act together and, oddly enough, Oliver had already moved on to a younger partner no children involved.
So, shall we start over, love? Sophie cooed, lightly brushing his hand. Shed nicknamed him OllietheDreamer in their most intimate moments.
Oliver went with the flow, as if those long years hadnt existed.
Do the girls remember me? Sophie asked.
The girls no longer thought of her; theyd a different mum Shirley.
Of course they do! Oliver lied. In love, any means are fair.
Fine then, mothers mother! Sophie proclaimed. I know youre married! Divorce, take the girls, and lets live as before!
They swapped numbers. Call me, Ill be waiting, she said, and Oliver headed home. But how could he explain this to Sasha? The divorce, the girls, the whole mess? Hed lost his mind and was determined to see it through, caring little for Sasha or the two girls whod grown accustomed to him. Hormones, he thought, ruled all.
He took a deep breath and announced, Im leaving you!
My gut feeling about Shirley was right; shed never truly known her husband. A brief encounter with his exwife was enough to make him rewrite everything. Sasha paused, gathering strength, then retorted, Fine, if thats how it is, go! You cant force love.
But thats not all! Sophie and I will take the girls, Oliver shouted. The girls need a proper mum and dad!
Is that so? Sasha asked calmly. And whos going to give them that?
How could anyone refuse? Were the biological parents, and the laws on our side! Oliver exclaimed. Any court will back us!
Exactly, exactly! Sasha replied, keeping her tone steady. What about the fact their mothers rights were stripped? Youve forgotten the law, havent you?
Well decide everything, even the custody! Oliver said. You inform the girls.
No way, Sasha snapped. Whoever thinks they can dictate this.
It was a Sunday, everyone at home. The doting dad burst in with the bombshell: Soon well all be together!
Yes, were already together! chorused the sweet twins, Anya and Tanya.
No, I mean your real mum! their father clarified.
The girls looked at each other, then Anya pointed at the pale Shirley and asked, Are you talking about our mum?
No, you have another biological mum! their father replied.
Is that the one who vanished a hundred years ago? The one Grandma Zoe always wanted to punish? Anya retorted sarcastically. You mean her?
Shes changed, realised her mistakes, their father said.
Were glad for her, Tanya added. Let her keep improving. But what does this have to do with us?
Its simple were a family now.
Alexandra stayed silent, letting the girls decide.
Dad, are you serious? Anya asked. Do you really think we should live with that other aunt?
Dont speak of your mother like that! Oliver roared, perhaps for real this time. If you wont come willingly, well sue you and Sophie!
He then left, apparently to his beloved he had nowhere else to go. He later filed for divorce.
He also followed through on his threat, suing for the girls return. The court, however, sided with Sasha and the twins; after ten years the children were already fourteen, and their interests clashed with the fathers. Who would hand the children over to a mother stripped of rights? Shirley had prepared, gathering all the papers. In fact, shed adopted the girls years ago.
Sophie and the girls finally met in court after a long hiatus. The loving mother, fierce in defending her family, didnt even go to hug them.
This is lawlessness, we wont let it stand! Oliver shouted.
Good luck, dad! Tanya replied, and the three of them went to a café to celebrate the win. Yes, with mum, not with that foreign aunt.
