**Putting an Impertinent Sister-in-Law in Her Place**
I finally stood my ground against my husbands overbearing sister.
*”Mum says the restaurants booked,”* Caroline said breezily, completely ignoring the tension in Isabelles voice. *”Oh, and about the moneyhave you and Anthony transferred it yet?”*
Isabelle hesitated, scrambling for the right words, but Caroline ploughed on.
*”Its not even that much, honestly. I even thought about chipping in myself, but with my expenses Well, its for Mum. You get it, dont you?”*
*”Hold on”* Isabelle interrupted, struggling to stay calm. *”We never agreed to this. Anthony never mentioned anything.”*
*”Oh, you know how forgetful he is,”* Caroline laughed, as if it were the most natural thing. *”I told him itd come to about thirty-five thousand pounds. Fair for an occasion like this, right?”*
Her words carried a finalityno room for objections. Isabelle clenched her phone, irritation simmering.
*”Thirty-five *thousand*?”* she repeated slowly, barely above a whisper.
*”Yes! I even got a discountcakes, service, youll see for yourself. Mums going to love it. Anyway, no stress, Ive already paid the deposit. Anthony said youd cover the rest.”*
Caroline hung up before Isabelle could respond.
She sat frozen, staring at her phone. A lump formed in her throat. *”Here we go again. Always a one-way street.”*

That evening, the kitchen air was thick with tension. Anthony opened the fridge, grabbed a bottle of lager, and without looking at Isabelle muttered,
*”Caroline said youre against chipping in for the restaurant.”*
Isabelle stiffened.
*”Against? Thats what she told you?”* She stood, forcing her voice steady. *”Did I refuse? I wasnt even consulted until she dropped it on me!”*
Anthony turned, frowning.
*”Come on, shes not doing this for herself. Mum doesnt celebrate birthdays every year.”*
*”And its fine for her to stick *us* with the bill? Thirty-five grand, Anthony! Thirty-five thousand poundsdoes that seem normal to you?”*
He shrugged, avoiding her eyes.
*”Its for Mum. What do you want? Carolines done all the planning.”*
Isabelle scoffed.
*”Oh, shes done a brilliant jobwith *our* money. And tell me, Anthony, why do you just roll over for this? Did we discuss it? No. She decided, and you nodded along.”*
*”Drop it,”* he snapped, grabbing a glass. *”Shes just trying her best.”*
*”For who? Us? Mum? Or herself?”* Isabelles voice rose before she checked it, mindful of their sleeping son. *”Anthony, Ive had enough. Its always Give, transfer, pay with her, then she vanishes like nothing happened.”*
He stayed silent, staring into his drink.
*”What do you want me to do? Thats just how she is. Talk to her if it bothers you.”*
*”I *have*,”* Isabelle bit out. *”And you know what she said? That it was our *duty*.”*
*”Well, what did you expect? Shes handling everything alone. Maybe her lifes harder than ours.”*
*”Handling?!”* Isabelle scoffed. *”Anthony, she *uses* everyone around herand you *let her*!”*
The argument fizzled. Anthony mumbled something unintelligible and walked out, leaving Isabelle alone with her thoughts.
***
The next morning brought another unwelcome call. Isabelle answered flatly.
*”Hiya, Izzy! You free?”* Carolines voice was sickly sweet.
*”What do you want?”* Isabelle braced herself.
*”Listen, I need a favour. Ive started this little side hustle with a mateonline boutique, you know how it is. Anyway, I need to cover some costs, and Im skint. Thought you could lend me your card? Just for a few dayspromise Ill pay you back!”*
For a moment, Isabelle couldnt speak.
*”Caroline,”* her voice turned icy, *”youre joking, right? *My* card?”*
*”Yeah! Whats the big deal? Ill be carefulwont touch a penny extra!”*
*”No. Not happening.”*
Silence. Then
*”I dont get it,”* Caroline feigned hurt. *”Its just a card. Why wont you help?”*
*”Because my peace of mind matters. And so does my card.”*
*”Izzy, dont you *trust* me?”* Indignant nowanother guilt trip. *”Were *family*.”*
Isabelle bit her tongue.
*”Were done here, Caroline.”* She hung up, equal parts relieved and furious. *”Unbelievable.”*
When Anthony came home that night, she didnt mince words.
*”Your sister called again.”*
He toed off his shoes, avoiding her gaze. *”And?”*
*”She asked for my card. For her project.”*
Anthony paused, blinking. *”Whatd you say?”*
*”Obviously, no.”*
*”Why *couldnt* you help her?”* His tone sharpened. *”Shes *family*.”*
Isabelle exhaled slowly. *”Anthony, in your family, do you *ever* draw the line between a favour and outright cheek? Cant she sort her own mess?”*
*”Izzy, its not like she asked for *millions*. You always overcomplicate things.”*
She stared, incredulous. *”*Im* overcomplicating? Shes the one treating us like a cash machine!”*
He muttered something about *”just helping”* and stomped off to bed.
Isabelle sat at the table, something inside her snapping for good. She was done. Caroline didnt just intrudeshe *wrecked* things.
All evening, she plotted. Calm. Rational. *Final.*
***
The following week, at a family dinner, Caroline held court, crowing about her *”exciting ventures.”* Isabelle watched, stone-faced, while Anthony fidgeted beside her.
*”So, me and my mate are *totally* self-funding this,”* Caroline gushed. *”You know how tough it is right now!”*
Isabelle cleared her throat. *”Caroline, forgot to mention the part where you *use* everyone elses money?”*
The table froze. Caroline blinked. *”What?”*
*”You asked for *my* card. And lets not forget Anthony loaned you cash for your carstill waiting on that payback, by the way.”*
Caroline flushed. *”Thatsthats *private*! Why air it here?”*
*”Because *private* stops when you keep *taking*,”* Isabelle shot back. *”Family doesnt mean free rein to exploit.”*
*”Youre just *jealous*!”* Caroline spat, standing abruptly. *”I *do* everything for everyone, and you *nickel-and-dime* me!”*
Isabelle smirked. *”Jealous? Of your talent for *mooching*? Please.”*
Caroline stormed out. Anthony stood, wounded. *”Whyd you do that? Shes my *sister*.”*
*”And why do you *let* her?”* Isabelle held his gaze until he looked away, then chased after Caroline.
That night, Anthony didnt come home. Just a text: *”Need time to think.”*
Isabelle sat alone on the sofa. Shed done the right thing.
So why did it feel like losing?
