With a heavy heart, I gathered my things to leave with my son for my mothers house. The thought of going twisted inside me, yet there I was, packing our bags as my husband, Thomas, had so casually suggested. The day before, while I was out walking our boy, Henry, Thomas had decided to play the generous host by offering our bedroom to his cousin, Eleanor, her husband, Gregory, and their two children, Charlotte and Oliverall without so much as asking me. You and Henry can stay with your mother, hed said, as if it were the simplest thing in the world. Our home, our bed, handed over to strangers while I was expected to simply step aside? No, this was too much.
It began when I returned from our stroll. Henry was fussy, tired, and Id longed to tuck him in before settling down with a quiet cup of tea. But the flat was in disarray the moment I stepped inside. Eleanor and Gregory had already claimed our room. Their children darted about, scattering toys, while my belongingsbooks, cosmetics, even my typewriterwere shoved into a corner as though I no longer mattered. I stood frozen, breathless. What on earth is this? Thomas, unbothered, merely shrugged. Eleanors lot needed a place to stay. Thought you wouldnt mind popping round your mums. Plenty of space there.
I nearly choked on my fury. First, this was our homeevery stick of furniture chosen together, every pound saved for years. Now I was to vanish because his family fancied a holiday in London? And why hadnt he asked me? Perhaps Id have agreed, had there been a proper conversation. But this? This was an order. Eleanor, for her part, offered no apology. Oh, come now, Margaret, shed said with a dismissive wave, well only be a fortnight! A fortnight? I didnt want them near my things for a single hour.
Gregory said nothing, lounging on our sofa, sipping tea from my favourite cup as if it were his own. Their children were worse. Charlotte, six, had spilt juice on the rug, while Oliver, four, had turned my wardrobe into a hiding den. When I pointed out this wasnt a boarding house, Eleanor merely laughed. Honestly, theyre only little. What do you expect? Of course. And who would clean up after them?
Alone with Thomas, I tried to make him see how deeply his disregard cut. Henry needed routine, not a makeshift bed at his grandmothers. But Thomas only sighed. Margaret, dont make a fuss. Theyre family. We ought to help. Family? And what were we? My eyes burned, but I swallowed the tears and packed our cases. If he thought Id simply obey, he was mistaken.
My mother, Evelyn, was livid when she heard. Thomas thinks hes lord of the manor, does he? Come here, lovetheres room for you and Henry. As for that husband of yours, hell answer for this! She was ready to march over and toss the lot of them out. But I wouldnt have a scene. I just needed quiet to think.
As I folded Henrys clothes, he looked up at me with wide eyes. Mummy, how long are we staying with Granny? I pulled him close. Not long, darling. Just until Daddy understands. But in my heart, I knewI wouldnt return until our home was ours again. And Thomas would have to choose: his precious hospitality or his own family.
