Nineteen years ago, my parents gave me up, leaving me in an orphanage. At the time, I was only ten, and I understood exactly what was happening. Those memories still cause me pain to this day.
Almost two decades have gone by, and I’ve learned to live with that pain. Growing up in the orphanage made me resilient and independent. I got an education, found a good job, and bought a two-bedroom flat and a car. Everything I have, I’ve achieved entirely on my own.
One day, the past caught up with me in the most unexpected way. On an ordinary day, while picking up my usual pack of ground coffee at the local shop, I noticed a woman staring at me intently. At first, I dismissed it, but her gaze felt uncomfortably familiar.
A few days later, I realised this woman was waiting near my building. I initially thought it was a coincidence, but it happened repeatedly. I began to feel uneasy leaving my home, sensing her eyes on me.
Finally, she mustered the courage to approach me. Her voice was trembling as she said, “I’m your mother.” I was stunned, unable to believe my ears. But as she began recounting details from my childhood that only my parents could know, there was no denying it.
Inside, a storm of emotions raged—anger, hurt, distrust. How dare she show up after all these years? Where was she when I needed her most?
But the surprises didn’t stop there. She began asking me for money, saying my father drank and they didn’t even have enough for food. Then came an even more shocking request: she wanted to move in with me to “take care” of me, cooking, cleaning, and greeting me after work.
That was the last straw. I couldn’t believe her audacity. Holding back tears and fury, I firmly told her never to appear in my life again. She tried to argue, but I remained steadfast.
After the incident, it took me a long time to regain my composure. Memories surged back with renewed force. I wondered if things would have been different had they not given me up back then. Yet, on the other hand, those very challenges shaped me into who I am today.
Life is full of unexpected turns. But one thing I know for certain: the past shouldn’t dictate our future. We create our own fate, regardless of the circumstances.
