I have always considered myself incredibly lucky because Ive always been someone who sets clear goals and works hard to achieve them. By the time I turned twenty-five, Id managed to save enough money on my own to purchase a flat in London.
I had no support from my mum or dad, nor from any relativesevery achievement was mine alone. So, when I fell in love, I didnt hesitate to tell the man I was seeing that I already owned my own place.
Still, I made it clear from the beginning that I had no intention of giving up my independence by moving into his home. We agreed that we would rent somewhere together, and I would let out my flat to save up for a car.
He seemed happy with the plan and assured me hed soon be able to save up for rent, so we could start our life together. Six months went by, and then one evening, he turned up at my doorstep in London with a suitcase, telling me he was out of work and had run out of money.
He asked if he could stay with me for a while. Fortunately, he has parents he could rely on. I didnt let him move inI couldnt shake the feeling that he was just looking for an excuse to live off me, rather than build something together. In the end, I decided to end things with him.
Theres a simple lesson in all of this: independence and self-respect are worth more than any relationship built on convenience. Always value your own hard work and never settle for someone who doesnt respect your boundaries or the life youve created for yourself.
