Shame Unwrapped: How My Mother-in-Law Tested My Patience

**”The Shame in the Bag”: How My Mother-in-Law Tested My Patience**

Emily was sorting through her wardrobe when the doorbell rang unexpectedly. There, grinning widely on the doorstep, stood her mother-in-law—Margaret Wilkins.

“Hello, dear! Thought I’d pop in for tea,” the woman chirped.

“Come in,” Emily forced a polite smile, though inwardly she stiffened. “Let me just finish tidying, then we’ll sit down.”

They moved to the living room. Emily continued folding clothes neatly while Margaret settled into the armchair, watching with undisguised curiosity.

Unable to resist, Margaret’s gaze landed on a shopping bag by the chair. Peering inside, her eyes widened, and she gasped.

“Emily! What on earth is *this*?”

“More clothes, I see!” Margaret tsked, eyeing the shopping bags on the sofa disapprovingly.

“Those are old purchases,” Emily replied flatly, rolling her eyes. “Just reorganising my wardrobe.”

“Does my son know how much you’re spending?” Margaret snipped.

“I earn my own money, incidentally,” Emily shot back, speeding up just to end the conversation.

But Margaret wasn’t done. She pulled out one of the dresses, scrutinising it like a detective.

“You’d only wear this in Soho at midnight,” she sneered.

“The tag’s still on,” Emily said coldly, reaching for it. “Clearly, I haven’t worn it anywhere.”

“Thank heavens for that!” Margaret huffed, relinquishing it. “At your age, must you dress like a teenager?”

“I’m twenty-nine, not fifty-nine,” Emily reminded her with an icy smile.

“At your age, you should wear things *respectable*—longer, thicker. Not flashing skin like some pop star,” Margaret sniffed. “No wonder there are no grandchildren yet!”

“How does my *wardrobe* relate to children?” Emily’s temper flared.

“Simple. If you dress like *that*, you must be looking for someone younger,” Margaret declared, as if delivering gospel truth.

Emily paled with rage.

“So, married women should dress like nuns?”

“A *proper* wife dresses modestly!” Margaret jabbed a finger in the air. “And your *underwear*—good grief!”

“You went through my things?!” Emily’s voice shook.

“I did *no such thing*!” Margaret retorted. “I saw it in the laundry. And let me tell you—those *scraps* are disgraceful for a decent woman!”

“Are you serious?” Emily’s fists clenched. “Shall I get *office-appropriate* lingerie, then?”

“A *respectable* woman wouldn’t wear such nonsense, especially not a *married* one!” Margaret thumped the armrest for emphasis.

“I’m twenty-nine, young, and I’ll dress as I please,” Emily ground out.

“You *want* men staring! That’s the truth!” Margaret threw up her hands theatrically.

“Think whatever you like,” Emily said wearily. “But my choices are mine.”

“Useless talking to you!” Margaret stormed out, slamming the door behind her.

When her husband, James, returned, Emily unloaded the entire ordeal.

“Mum mentioned you dress… provocatively,” he said awkwardly. “Ignore her. Just… maybe avoid fishnets around her—they set her off.”

“Nothing pleases her!” Emily exploded.

“She’ll grumble and move on,” James waved it off.

He was wrong.

A month later, Margaret returned with a fresh “concern”:

“You’re posting *photos* online! My friends saw! They’re *horrified*!” she wailed.

“Jealousy isn’t a good look,” Emily replied coolly.

Margaret huffed and left. Emily sighed, relieved it was over.

She was mistaken.

When she and James went on holiday six months later, leaving keys with Margaret “just in case,” they never imagined what awaited their return.

Emily’s stomach dropped—most of her clothes were *gone*.

“It’s *her*!” Emily paced frantically. “Only your mother had keys!”

“No way,” James hesitated. “I’ll call her.”

But Margaret sobbed into the phone: “*Me*? How dare you, James! Never!”

Emily shook her head. “I’m calling the police.”

Only then did Margaret confess, panicked:

“Fine—*yes*! I bagged your shameless rags and binned them! It was *for your own good*—so you’d finally act like a proper wife!”

James was livid.

“Mum, have you lost your mind?!” he roared. “Now I’m paying to replace *everything*!”

“Well—” Margaret tried.

“Hand the keys back. And stay *away*!” he snapped.

For her birthday, Margaret received three lone roses—no lavish gift in sight.

That same day, Emily went shopping—James insisting this time: “Get whatever you want, love. You’ve earned it.”
