She handed her a biscuit and whispered, You need a home, and I need a mum.

Long ago, I recall a biting December wind tearing through the night, and Margaret stood at an old London bus stop, shivering in a thin dress with a battered satchel hanging from her shoulder.

She was twenty-four, though life had weathered her beyond her years. For three straight days, shed done her best to survive, and the frostbitten pavement beneath her bare feet was almost numb by now.

Snow fell silently over the city, blanketing the stone with a gentle hush. People hurried homeward to their cozy hearths while she held herself tight, invisible to those passing by.

Suddenly, a little girl of about four, bundled in a warm woolen coat, stopped in front of her, clutching a small paper bag in mittened hands.

Are you cold? the girl asked, her voice soft.

A little, but Ill manage, Margaret replied, masking the truth.

The childs gaze dropped to Margarets feet. She held out the bag.

These are for you. My dad bought me biscuits, but you look like you need them more.

A man stood a few paces off, watching quietly but not intervening. Margaret took the offering. The biscuits were still warm and their sweet scent tugged tears from her eyes.

Thank you she murmured.

The little girl looked up earnestly. You need a home. I need a mum.

Margaret was at a loss for words. Whats your name?

Emily. My mummys up in heaven. Daddy says shes an angel. Are you an angel?

Im not an angel, Margaret replied. Just a person whos made a few mistakes.

Emily reached out, brushing her cheek gently.

Everyone makes mistakes. Thats why love matters.

At that moment, the man approached.

Im Thomas. You look in need of shelter. Theres a spare room at ours, just for the night.

Margaret hesitated before agreeing. Their house was filled with warmth, and one night quickly turned into many.

Thomas, widowed these past six months, and Emily filled an ache within her she thought long lost. Margaret shared her story: losing her job, spending her savings on her mothers illness, and finally ending up on the streets.

Thomas never judged. He helped her find work at the local library.

In time, peace nestled back into Margarets heart. Emilys laughter rang true, and shed fall asleep only when Margaret was close by.

One day, Emily asked, Will you stay forever?

Thomas answered with a quiet nod. Margaret opened her arms.

If you want me here, I will stay.

Emily flung her arms around her.

Now youre my mummy.

Margaret understood then that family isnt always bound by blood. Sometimes, its found in the hands that reach for you when youre lost.

That wintry night had begun with biscuits and ended with a home. For the first time in years, Margaret no longer feared what tomorrow would bring. She was home.
