Stop Sulking, I’m Hungry! Is a Second Sick Day Really an Excuse to Stay in Bed?

“Stop whining, I’m starving! Since when does a two-day cold mean you can stay in bed?”

My friend Emily’s marriage reached its breaking point over her husband’s sheer inability to grasp the simplest things. We’ve known each other since school, and though I always saw her as strong, it still baffles me that she endured that relationship for three long years.

Her husband, Richard, was the type who only saw things his way. Migraine? Fever over 100? Didn’t matter—dinner still had to be on time. To Richard, being a wife meant being a cook, cleaner, nurse, and therapist all at once, yet he couldn’t muster even an ounce of sympathy in return.

When Emily was hospitalised with flu complications, he didn’t visit once. The moment she came home, all he cared about was his meal. “I barely slept all night,” she told him. He scoffed. “Oh, spare me the drama! Tired, are you? Then quit lazing about and get moving—I want my dinner!”

Emily got up—but not to cook. She went to the registry office, packed her things, and left for her parents’ house. No fights, no shouting. Just silence. And it was the right choice. When love turns to contempt, staying only breaks you further.

Now, there’s strength in her voice again. I know she’ll be just fine. Some people mistake kindness for weakness—but walking away takes the most courage of all.
