Stubborn Grandparents, Yet Without Support: Why We Resist Their Help for the First Home Deposit

My husband’s parents were wealthy, yet they refused to help with the deposit for our first home. A child hardly needs grandparents like that.

My husband, William, came from a well-to-do family. They lived in a grand townhouse in the heart of London, owned several cars, and often holidayed abroad. I, on the other hand, grew up in a modest household in a small village near Cambridge. When William and I met and decided to marry, our different backgrounds didnt matter. We were young, in love, and determined to build our lives on our own terms. Of course, we wouldnt have refused help if it had been offeredbut none came, as Gabby would later recount.

For years, William and I dreamed of owning a flat. We were tired of bouncing between cramped rented rooms where the wallpaper peeled, the taps dripped, and landlords seemed only to wait for us to move on. Williams parents knew of our struggles yet acted as though they were blind to them. They had moneyplenty of itand could have helped if theyd wished. But it seemed they had no such desire.

My own parents lived far away in the countryside near Cambridge. Their means were modest, and I never expected their assistance. Williams parents were right there in the same city, yet after the wedding, we chose not to live with themwe wanted our independence. We rented, worked tirelessly, skipped holidays, all to save for a place of our own. His parents knew this, yet remained aloof.

Once, we visited them for dinner. As usual, my mother-in-law asked when we might give her a grandchild. I seized the moment.

Well think about a child once we have our own flat. Right now, we cant even scrape together the deposit.

She merely gave a pitying smile, not a word in response. Her gaze was empty, as if my words had vanished into thin air.

A few months later, I discovered I was expecting. The news turned our lives upside down. We told Williams parents, who were overjoyedcongratulating us, making plans to dote on their grandchild. I decided to be blunt and asked if they might at least help with the deposit. After all, every child deserved a stable home.

But my mother-in-laws expression turned cold. She replied sharply that they had no spare money and could do nothing. A lie! Just the day before, she had boasted to William about buying a new Range Rover. So, they had money for a car but none for their son and future grandchilds home?

I held my tongue, but inside, anger and hurt simmered. The dream of a proper home for our child crumbled before my eyes. Resigned, I accepted that wed have to keep squeezing into rented roomsat least for now.
