Tattoo, Please… Don’t Come to School Today, Alright?

Dad, please dont come to school today, okay?
Why, Emily? Youll get a prize; I wanted to see that moment.
No, dont. Everyone will be there the kids, the parents and you
And me what?
Youre covered in dust, Father. Straight from work. Theyll all laugh.

He froze. In his hand a wilted wildflower, plucked from the roadside, trembled.

Youre right, love, he murmured. I was in such a hurry I didnt even change clothes. I didnt want to be late.
Just dont come! the little girl shouted. Ill be mortified!

He gave a small nod and a faint smile.

All right, Emily. I wont be there.

Turning, he walked away, clutching that single flower tightly.

They lived in a modest clay cottage that George had built with his own hands many years ago. Their mother had left when Emily was five. From dawn till dusk he laboured in the cold and rain, scraping together enough to buy her a book, a pair of shoes, a jug of milk.

Dad, we have no fridge!
Thats fine, darling. The pantry on the landing stays cool, he replied, grinning.

Years slipped by. Emily excelled at school, won competitions, and earned a place at university in Bristol. George gave her everything he owned.

Here, love, for your flat.
But youll have nothing left!
Ill keep the one thing that matters my pride in you.

Ill come home, I promise! Ill take you back with me! she vowed.

He only waved a hand.

No need, dear. Im used to this garden, my chickens, the quiet.

Time moved on. He called often; her replies grew rarer.

Dad, Im busy, Ill ring back later.
Alright, sweetheart. Just dont go hungry.

One afternoon he decided to surprise her without warning. He packed a sack with homecooked food cabbage rolls, fresh bread, a buttery pie. At the hotel entrance a receptionist stopped him.

Who are you looking for, sir?
My daughter, Emily George.
Ah, the lady from the Royal Charity Gala? Shes at the event tonight; its a big night. Better leave the parcel here.
No, Id like just a moment with her.

He entered the ballroom where the charity ball was in full swing. She stood by the stage, elegant and confident, surrounded by wellknown guests. He approached, hesitant.

Emily its me, your father.

She spun around, eyes wide.

Father?! What are you doing here?
I brought you a bit of home cooking
Please, go away! This is a private function!

The sack slipped, the tins clattered at his feet. He crouched to gather them and whispered,

Im sorry I never meant to embarrass you.

He slipped out quietly. A cleaner came over, helped tidy the scattered items.

Dont be sad, sir. The children will come back sometimes only when its almost too late.

He forced a sad smile.

Yes, when theres no one waiting.

Decades later Emily married, built a successful career, and often said her father was no longer alive. Then a small town invited her to a charity evening titled Ordinary People, Extraordinary Hearts.

On the stage, an elderly man rose. His hands were rough, his gaze gentle.

My name is George. Im not a great man, but I know what love is. I raised my daughter on my own. Shes gone far, and I pray for her every day. If she could hear me, Id tell her: I love you, even if youve forgotten me.

A hush fell over the hall. Emily stood, hand covering her mouth.

Father

She rushed onto the stage and fell into his arms.

Forgive me! Im sorry I was ashamed of you!

He held her tight and whispered,

My dear, I forgave you long ago. I was just waiting.

Their story spread across the country. Inspired, Emily founded the Fathers Heart charity for orphaned children and lonely elders. At the inaugural gala, eyes glistening, she said,

The man who taught me every kindness never had a formal education, yet he gave me the greatest lesson: true love never feels ashamed.

She took his hand.

Father, today youre our honoured guest.

The audience rose. He smiled through tears.

You see, love doesnt fade. Pain passes, but love endures forever.
