The day that turned my life upside down I was heading out with my mates for a holiday when something slipped under the tyre and forced me to brake hard. I stopped to see what had happened and I was left speechless.
We were on the road with the gang, in great spirits sun shining, music blasting, jokes flying, and all we could think about was a big grill and carefree days.
The road wound through a wood when suddenly something darted straight under the wheel. I slammed the brakes, the car skidded a little to the side. Everyone went quiet.
Did you see that? whispered Blythe, gripping Jacks hand.
Something passed I muttered and jumped out of the car immediately.
We walked to the roadside. My heart hammered as if it already knew what was coming.
And then I saw it under a hedge sat a tiny creature. A little Chihuahua, shivering, filthy, exhausted and terrified. Its ears were stuck in opposite directions, and its eyes full of fear but also a strange trust. It didnt bark. It just stared.
How did it end up here? Blythe whispered, crouching beside it.
I think someone threw it Jack said, frowning. They were driving and left it.
In that instant something shifted inside me. I felt as if I were watching myself from outside.
I scooped it up. It didnt struggle. It simply pressed its nose against my neck. That was all. Then I realized there was no turning back. It was ours. Or rather mine. Before I knew it I said,
Come on. Lets call you Biscuit.
That holiday turned out nothing like Id planned. No parties, no loud music, no lazy days on the beach. Instead vet visits that cost a few pounds each, three washes a day, nighttime walks and the constant question: What do we feed this little fussbudget?.
But I was happy. We all were. Especially him. Biscuit seemed to sense his luck had changed and showed it in everything he did through love, loyalty and the soft little sigh he made when he fell asleep on my chest.
Two years have passed since then.
I moved to a new town, quit that dreadful job and took up photography because Biscuit became my first model. We now have a small studio and we hardly ever part. You know sometimes life doesnt change because you decide it but because, on the road, a tiny puppy appears that simply wont let you walk past.
That day truly reshaped my whole life. And Im grateful for every second of it.
Lesson: the smallest unexpected moments can steer us onto a richer path, if were willing to pause and embrace them.
