The elderly lady turned to Robert and said words that sent a shiver down his spine: Today will be bright and sunny. Well have plenty of time to accomplish something.
Robert was travelling by train on a calm Wednesday morning, and the carriage was comfortably quiet. An older lady stepped in and sat beside him, clearly bound for her allotment in the countrysidejust as Robert was, along with several others in the carriage. Memories of his late wife swept over him. They used to travel together to their garden plot; after her illness, hed avoided going, haunted by loneliness and longing.
As the train pulled into the station, the lady turned to Robert and spoke words that chilled him: Today will be bright and sunny. Well have plenty of time to accomplish something. Those were the very words his late wife used to say. Startled, Robert nodded in agreement, and soon they were deep in conversationtalking about the years poor crops, the rough winter past, and their hopes for the seasons ahead.
When they arrived at the bus stop, Robert wondered how it was hed never met this woman before. They walked together for a while and then parted ways. Upon reaching his plot, Robert found that it had become overrun with weeds during his lengthy absence. Yet, the cheerful talk with the lady had lifted his spirits, and he felt inspired to spend some time exploring the familiar ground.
With renewed enthusiasm, he set about clearing the beds and pulling weeds. The satisfaction of seeing the rich earth once again made him decide against selling the plot for now. He took a break on a weathered bench, enjoying ham sandwiches and a flask of tea. Watching his favourite blooms sway gently and eyeing the ripening apples beneath the new tree brought back fond memories.
Roberts mood was much improved, and he resolved to return more often. While gathering mushrooms along the woodland edge, he felt as if a weight had been lifted from his heart. He decided then and there to keep workingdiscovering that it brought a renewed sense of joy and meaning to his days.
On the journey home, he met the same woman from the train, and together they shared apples, laughing over tales of their gardening mishaps and successes. She reminded Robert that there was still much life ahead for him and encouraged him to find happiness and purpose in his work. As Robert got off at his stop, he smiled at the setting sun, feeling content, no longer burdened by sorrow.
Sometimes, a simple conversation can help us rediscover the beauty and meaning in life, no matter how heavy our hearts may feel.
