**The Illusion of a Prince Shattered**
He was never the prince of her dreams
Emily had met Daniel just after he returned from military service. He looked as if hed stepped straight from the pages of a glossy magazinetall, athletic, with striking green eyes and dark, wavy hair. Beside him, Emily felt plain, though she was pretty in her own way: fair hair, a slender frame, and a gentle smile. She could hardly believe her luckout of all the girls, hed chosen her.
*”What does he see in you?”* her friends whispered. *”Men like him dont stay for long. Hell leave.”*
But Emily only smiledshe believed in their love. They went to the cinema, danced at clubs, met friends. Daniel never complimented her looks, yet he stayed by her side, and his touch made her weak. The first time she brought him home, her motherMargaret Whitmorefrowned. Later, in private, she murmured:
*”Handsome men belong to others, darling. Rarely are they faithful. Wait before marriagetest him. He seems too polished.”*
Emily was hurt. She trusted Daniels feelings and refused doubt. But her mother had planted unease in her heart.
Slowly, Daniel changed. First, the gym, then swimming, then new friends. To stay close, Emily joined his workouts but felt awkward among the toned, confident women. Daniels gaze lingered on them, and shed leave early, hiding her tears.
*”Youre frail as a doll,”* he laughed once when she caught a cold after swimming. *”Stay home with your books.”*
The words stung, and she remembered her mothers warning. Daniel grew coldermore outings alone, fewer calls, no invitations. Then, he vanished. No answers, no explanations.
*”Still no word?”* her mother asked.
*”No”* Emily whispered, turning toward the wall.
*”Up you get! Were off to the hairdresser!”* Margaret ordered. *”A new style is step one to a new life. Then, well sew you a dressyouve a talent for it.”*
They bought fabric; Emily sketched designs, forcing herself to move on. Rumours of Daniels new romances reached her, but she endured. Weeks later, at a dancewearing her new dress, glowingshe turned heads. She was noticed.
A quiet, unassuming man named Thomas began to care for her. No striking looks, but his eyes held only warmth for Emily. Within a month, he proposed.
*”Now thats a man!”* her mother said. *”When he loves, he commits. What do you say?”*
*”Yes,”* Emily replied softly.
*”Do you love him?”*
*”How could I not? Hes kind, hardworking, loyal. Im all he needsand only me.”*
Their wedding was warm, full of heart. They started from nothingtheir first chair, their first plate. A year later, a daughter was born; three more, a son. Family, love, contentment.
She rarely thought of Daniel. Only snippets reached herhow hed left his wife, chased affairs, now drifted rootlessly. Emily would smile:
*”What was between us? Just a chapter of youth. Let him find happiness, if he can.”*
At home waited her children, her husband. And her motherwise, kind, her dearest. The one whod spared her true heartbreak. The reason Emily found her quiet, steady joy.
Mum always stay close. Without you, life isnt half as bright.
