The Man of My Dreams Left His Wife for Me, But I Had No Idea What Was Coming

The man of my dreams left his wife for me, but I had no idea what was about to unfold.

I had been infatuated with him since our college days, living in a small town near Oxford. It was a blind, mad love, the kind that sweeps you off your feet and makes you forget everything else. When he finally noticed me, I lost what little reason I had left. It happened years after university — fate brought us together at a law firm. We shared the same profession and interests, and I saw it as a sign, a fairytale on the brink of becoming reality.

He seemed like the ideal, a dream man. That he had a wife didn’t bother me in my youth — I didn’t understand what it was like when a marriage falls apart or the pain hidden in such stories. I felt no shame when James left his wife for me. Who could have known that this choice would lead to such sorrow for me? As the saying goes, you can’t build happiness on someone else’s misery.

When he chose me, I was on cloud nine, ready to forgive him anything. But in everyday life, he turned out to be far from a prince. His clothes were strewn around the flat, and he outright refused to do the dishes, leaving all the chores on my shoulders like a heavy burden. At the time, I overlooked it — love blinded me, made me soft, pliable, almost without a will of my own.

He forgot about his past marriage quickly, as if erasing it from memory. They had no children, and as he confessed, the wedding had been insisted upon by her parents. “With you, it’s different, you are my destiny,” he whispered to me, and I melted. My happiness was bright but brief, like a flash of lightning. Everything changed when I got pregnant.

At first, James was overjoyed — a child, his child! We threw a big family celebration and invited relatives and friends. Toasts, wishes for happiness and health for the baby — that evening remains a bright spot in my memory, a warm island in a sea of impending darkness. I don’t regret it, but after that night, my blind love began to wane, like a candle flickering in the wind.

As my belly grew, I saw James at home less and less. I went on maternity leave, and our encounters dwindled to late evenings. He stayed late at work, disappeared at office parties. Initially, I bore it, but soon it became unbearable. Everyday life turned into torture: heavily pregnant, I could hardly move, while his socks and shirts lay around like silent reminders of my naivety. I asked myself if we had rushed with the child. Love cools over time, I knew that, but I didn’t think it would evaporate so quickly.

He still brought flowers, chocolates, but that wasn’t what I needed — I wanted him by my side, his support, his warmth. Then the truth came out. A casual chat with colleagues over coffee opened my eyes: a new young and lively employee had joined the firm. The team was already stretched thin, and my maternity leave made the situation critical. Coincidence? I didn’t know if it was her, but James had clearly found someone on the side. His life now consisted of “work,” “meetings,” and “urgent events.” One day, I found a note with unfamiliar initials in his jacket pocket. My heart sank, but I quietly put it back, deciding to play blind. The fear of being alone at seven months pregnant paralyzed me.

He began to complain that I was “always on edge,” and every fight ended with his weary sigh, as if I were a burden. I was scared to discuss the real issue — I knew it was the end. And it came. The most terrible words I ever heard were: “I’m not ready for kids. I have someone else.” How he said it, I don’t recall; my mind was buzzing, my world crumbling. I thought I would go mad from the pain and humiliation.

But I found the strength within myself. I filed for divorce, though each letter in the petition felt like a blow to the heart. He didn’t expect me to do it, to throw out his things the next day. Thankfully, the flat was rented — there was nothing to divide.

“What about the child? Think about the child! How will you raise him?” he threw at me on his way out.

“I’ll manage. I’ll work from home. My parents will help. My mum always said you were a womanizer, I should have listened,” I replied, shutting the door firmly.

The responsibility for my son gave me a backbone I didn’t know I had. I would never have left on my own, but for him, I could. His betrayal was so vile that I erased James from my life as if he never existed. My eyes were opened, and I saw his true self.

The first few months post-divorce, including the birth, were hell. I returned to my parents’ house in a nearby town — they welcomed me with open arms, especially delighted with their grandson. I missed James, but pushed those thoughts away. Deep down, I knew: I had done the right thing and would give my son all I could.

Once I regained my strength, I took up work — translating legal texts from home. There were months without income, but my parents supported us until I found clients. My son grew, and the years flew by unnoticed. I realized it when I knew he needed his own space. My parents didn’t want us to leave, but I dreamed of independence — my office, his room for studying. By then, I could afford to rent a flat.

Life got better. Nursery turned into school; first grade became fifth, and for the first time in years, I felt free and at peace. But then he came back. Our little town isn’t big, and in the legal circle, everyone knows each other. James found my office easily. How I regretted not moving further away! He claimed he had “sown his wild oats,” regretted the past, and had been “young and foolish.” He begged to meet his son, whom he hadn’t even seen.

By law, he has the right to meet him, and if he wants to, he’ll achieve it. But the thought chills me to the bone. Several weeks have passed since that conversation. I told him I would think about it, but my mind is in chaos — I don’t trust him and don’t want him near my son. Perhaps this is my punishment? Retribution for taking him from his first wife? I’m seriously considering moving to another city to save us from this past that’s knocking on our door again.
